Probably a dumb question - when exactly (if that's the right word) did the SEL Bracelet become standard fare on the 16610 - I've conflicting beta?

SEL bracelets were produced by Rolex starting with the 118238 Day/Date on President Bracelets in Jan 2000. According to John Brozek's "The Rolex Report" they didn't start with Oyster Bracelets until 2001. Rolex updates various models periodically and not all at the same time. The series for the 16610 for this timeframe would have been "P" but anything is possible.

A's and P's were both made concurrently from ~1997 through 2000, so either answer is correct

My dad's K SD and EXP2 had SELs, FWIW.

Has anyone made or fitted some SEL's to the Non-SEL's bracelet? Mine is an A Serial using the hollow end links which feel spindly as you all know....I'd accept the bracelet more if I could fit SEL's to it!

I don't think that would work. On a non SEL bracelet the pin goes through the center link connecting the end piece. On a SEL the center link is apart of the end piece and thus connected permanently to the bracelet.
