2010s-the decade of the steel sports watch

As the end of a decade is upon a us it seems clear that the 2010s will be the decade of Steel Sports watches from a horological perspective.

Perhaps I am just in a funk, but seeing a steel sports watch in the wild does little to nothing for me anymore.

So as we look towards the roaring 20s 2.0....what could be in store for us watch obsessed?

Will it be the return of gold in a big way? I for one hope so, if I saw a person at a bar wearing a Patek Ellipse or a white gold modern Cellini I would be infinitely more interested that seeing another GMT.

What do you think the next decade will hold?

Happy New Year and Decade my friends. I wish you all luck in health in the 20s.

Because of the "relatively" lower price I think steel will remain popular. But life surprises us. Who knew a pretty obscure watch brand like Patek would become popular in the mainstream?

Maybe white gold or platinum will take off but I doubt it as most people who buy gold want it to look like gold and platinum also looks like steel.

Maybe some complication will take off but I can't see what it might be.

Maybe an e Device like an Apple watch...oh wait...

I think 904L is regal and illuminative, its unique and has a luster unlike any other SS. When brushed it glows, when polished it looks like a precious metal. I think its unique qualities has a lot to do with the popularity of Rolex SS models and other purveyors are piggybacking on the leader. JMHO

Stainless steel sport watches are timeless, I don’t see the next decade differing from previous ones.

Precious metal is just that, precious metal, aka > jewelry to me. I'd rather spend that extra difference in money for a more higher end piece of horology. Stainless steel is more than fine for me.

To each their own, I guess. I'm a huge fan of Gold watches but do still appreciate steel. Maybe with time that could change but for me these days less is more. Only time will tell but a new decade potentially bringing about new trends wouldn't be the first time in history. Happy New Year!

I have very little desire to own a PM watch personally. Super bummed you won’t do backflips when you see my Sub though.

Not the first (or even 20th) thing I look for when at a bar. ;-)

Since everything is cyclical I'm sure more yellow gold will come back into fashion more. I believe I read that it slid out during the financial meltdown around 2008 because the "haves" did not want to bling out, in front of the "have nots" for practical and empathetic reasons.

Although some people have a need to bling out, as a sign of "I made it", which is fine.

Personally I've never owned a gold watch merely for the reason I couldn't afford it, or thought that I could own 3 SS for the same price. (I'm talking gold and gold bracelet).

Some watches look better to me in gold than SS and some don't but I could love either.

And it doesn't impress me or have negative connotations whatever watch I see someone wearing.

Hard to disagree. He seems to know his stuff.

And personally, I still can't afford gold.

Doubt yellow gold will become popular any time soon.

After the covid kick, the economy is likely to be suffering for a while, and people won’t want to be seen flashing a shiny gold watch
