GMT 16700 - different date wheels
Hey all,
I just purchased a 16700 and was wondering aside from the vintage open 6s and 9s date wheel, were there more than one variant of the modern date wheels? Any knowledge would be lovely! Thanks. This is a S serial (c. 1993) - the numerals seem to a bit bolder but smaller ![]() And a U (c. 1997) ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Over the past 50 years there has been variants in fonts, font spacing, date wheel fonts plus many others, dials were made in 3 different factories now owned by Rolex.

There is variation in pretty much everything Rolex, so I would expect there is on the date wheel fonts as well.

I wonder if that’s the same one I’ve seen listed by one of this forum’s sellers that I’ve been lusting after. If so, thanks for removing the temptation - probably for the best! Enjoy this beautiful piece.

GMT 16700 - different date wheels
Yes the GMT font looks fatter.
Agree with the earlier opinions - but I have a nagging doubt about the S GMT date wheel being OEM. The digits aren’t aligned compared to the U. U GMT _____________________________________ S GMT Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Thanks everyone for opining. Apologies that seemed to have just been the angle from which I photographed. But yes, more concerned with the bold and smaller size. I’ve handled a few gmt’s from this era and had not seen the datewheel font deviate this much. Out of numerous dissertations on variation in a model, I wonder if there was one done on datewheels in the 16700? :D ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Based on previous ownership, I believe there are at least 5 or six variations of the 16700 date wheel. I've also learned from discussions with GMT 16700 owners that 99.9999% of these owners don't worry at all or could care less about their date wheels or what version they have in their watch. Count me in the latter group.

On a humurous note, who actually uses their GMT Master as intended (set red hand to GMT/UTC and rotating bezel for local time)?!

I have one, similar condition... Insert fade is awesome!
Seems to have a bolder font date wheel. Not that it matters much
