Buying from AD Vs Grey and watch value

Does anyone know if a Rolex SS sports model will hold it's value better if bought direct from the AD instead of grey, or does it not make a difference at all in resale?

Future value will be determined by condition. I can’t see how grey or AD makes a difference.

Some watch market value online estimators give an slightly higher appreciation value to the one from an AD.

That said at the end of the day as long as you have activated guarantee cards from Rolex for both it should not matter.

They all came from an AD at some point in the process, and none will be tied to the person to whom you’re selling (meaning their name won’t be on any paperwork), so I can’t see how it would matter one bit. When you’re selling, it’s a used watch to the new buyer no matter how you originally bought it.

Condition, completeness of set, age and service history I assume would all take precedence.

Depends on the model, and the price you paid for it from a grey market dealer.

There are grey market dealers who will sometimes sell a piece at a slight discount from street value (i.e., $12.5K instead of $14K for a Batman, for example) and so you'll probably be safe from any further drop... until you bang up the watch and it takes a hit. After that, who knows, maybe it'll appreciate in value 5-10 years down the line, but it probably won't skyrocket.

There's no one answer to your question. Buy an Explorer I from an AD and you'll lose money the minute you step out the door.
