Man. What the heck. This is why auction results should always be taken with a grain of salt and a shot of tequila.

There sure are some dark corners in auction houses. Last November a Tudor Heritage Black Bay Harrods Special Edition sold for CHF9375. And in a recent interview with George Mayer from WatchBox, Paul Boutros from Phillips said that they reject 70-80% of watches proposed to them.

And a Pepsi sold for CHF 27k later on. How can there be such a huge gap from chrono prices?

Was it a charitable auction of some sort?

I agree. I can’t make sense of their prices when compared to other greys.

Holy smokes Batman is right. 25k CHF?!?! That’s 36k Canadian. You can get these for 18k canadian all day long from any grey. Wtf is going on here? Were these pieces owned by someone special? I’m not seeing how the pricing warrants such a huge difference from other versions of the same watch from a trusted source.

It's a very cost effective way of publicity and marketing for the auction house.

I can see that. We are definitely talking about it publicly here. And we have just added add it all SEO value from a google scoring perspective.

In your opinion is this a BS sale?

It makes no sense to me either, it's not the only watch breaking the bank in this Auction.

money laundering? unless the watch has a very special serial number, or the current owner is a celebrity

There was nothing special about it in the auction item description. Just an unworn BLNR.

Someone got taken for a ride. Same with Pepsi as stated above. Might have been even worse though because condition was "excellent" which means it wasn't even stickered. I think it was a MK 1 one of the first off the production line...but still. C'mon.

If it's one of the first that's the only way I would think this is anything other than a buyer not knowing the market...and even then

  1. Swiss luxury watch market decimated in recent months.
  2. Most recognised luxury watch brand.
  3. One of the most sought after watches in the luxury watch market.
  4. Low key watch.
Additionally, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I'll never understand why people pay so much more at auctions. I'm wondering if that final price includes the 20% due to the auction house.

Seems like these two BLNR and BLRO threads are similarly themed. Perhaps it’s the auction site that is misrepresenting.

These 2 also went way beyond their high estimates.
