Slim the lugs down (more like the 5 digit subs or the SD43) and it won’t seem bigger, in fact it might appear smaller given how blocky the case is now. Look at a current Sub and SD43 side by side in person.

Retrofitting used to be a concern to Rolex years ago and new model parts never seem to fit on the older models. Made you have to buy a new watch if you wanted the upgrade. How much that is a concern today, I don't know with all the bracelet swapping we see. Any size change on the case makes swapping out anything on the old model hard.

Quite right and precisely my point.. the slimmed down lugs will give the appearance of being smaller. Increasing the size by 1mm offsets the slimmer lugs and the result may be a watch which looks basically the same size as the current reference.
