Rare or not I'm just going to hang onto mine. It really hits a natural sweet spot in the Rolex range. Easy choice when in doubt. Under the radar, but quite special.

You obviously don't agree. That's perfectly fine. That being said, sales performance hardly corresponds to the inherent merits of an object. I'm sure you're aware Paul Newman Daytonas were terrible sellers during their tenure. I could go on.

Funny how you mention the reference not being "loved" as an argument here. I suppose we truly live in a time where hype is all that matters.

Rarity is the post of this thread. Secondly, not talking about hype at all. I saw the watch in person, wasn't wowed by it. There was no need for external hype. It was short lugs and too fat wasn't even balanced IMO.

Just that date window floating somewhere on the dial is enough for me for getting bothered all day long!

As mentioned before, your dislike for the reference is obvious, and that's fine.

Your argument that the watch began to be praised and appreciated as a consequence of its discontinuation is simply wrong. Anecdotally, I purchased my first submariner (116610, bnib) for close to 20% off several years ago. Was it hence "not loved"?

There would seem to me some merit to the argument. I used to see the SD4K in dealer cases all the time and I could have had it for a discount. Once they announced the discontinuation of the piece............they were all quickly sold and its desirability went shooting up, along with the prices.

I am not saying the watch is not an outstanding piece or that there aren't many that bought the watch for its looks and proportions........ but to ignore that it garnered more attention once it was discontinued seems a little blind to the facts.

That could be said about the overwhelming majority of Rolex sports watches over the last several decades, which makes the original argument I was addressing, specifically aimed at the sd4k, factually incorrect.

I’ll admit it’s a bit thick, but I chose it for that reason. I have a bit of a build so I wanted a watch that represented that a bit.

Not to fan the flame with you guys...

But you could most certainly get a new SD4K for almost the exact same price as a new Sub Date from a grey back in 2016. Yet SD’s retail was much more. That says a lot about the desirability in my opinion.
