The taxman giveth...what to do??
So, I just completed my e-file. There will be enough in the return for a GMT-II Pepsi. YEAH!!!
The question is, do I blow it all on another Rolex.... Or spend it on my upcoming wedding? Just kidding, guys--I know what I have to do. Just wanted to share my agony with you all! The Pepsi has been singing to me lately at a particularly high volume.

I've never gotten a refund in my life, I always end up sending them a check; might as well walk outside and light the cash on fire.

The question should be which Rolex to buy, not if I should buy. Also the title should be "The taxman giveth and Rolex taketh".

Statistically speaking, the Rolex should last longer than the marriage...

Do not waste the money on your wedding!!!
I've never understood the purpose of a big, overdone wedding. So a bunch of people you see once ever couple years can witness your little exciting day? I say have a small, intimate ceremony with only the people relevant in your life, and spare the expense of the self important people who think they belong there. My wife's parents paid in excess of $20k for our wedding, and it lasted 4.5 hours. We have pictures to remember it, but the pictures would be the same with or without the extra guests that don't matter to us. They later told us that in the absence of the wedding expense, that money would have gone towards helping us purchase a house. So if you can think of an expense other than the wedding to use the money for, go for it! Weddings are a silly thing to throw money away on. |

I owe, like every year.
If I were you, I'd get the watch. A wedding is more of a temporal thing: it will last but a single day. A watch you can enjoy for decades. I've always found the nicest weddings to be simple affairs. Too much flash and bling at a wedding is bad luck. |

We're definitely not over-doing the wedding. This is the second for both of us; we've been married before for a combined total of under 5 years. So, we're not going to get carried away, but I think it's important to gather with family and close friends (with good food and booze). We're going to have about 40 people, including parents, siblings, and close friends, with an intimate (catered) gathering at our house afterward.
Still, it blows my mind how much things cost. $2000 for food for 40 people. $500 for a string duo to play the ceremony. Approx $1000 for booze, wine, and champagne. I'm paying a former client who needs a few bucks $200 to serve drinks and help us set up/clean up. And, of course, you have to get a new suit, dress, and some moderate decorations. I'm putting my folks up in a hotel for 5 days. Then you've got rings and honeymoon getting close to $10k by themselves. No church. No flowers. No reception hall. No rehearsal dinner. All in, from dress to rings to honeymoon, I'm well over $15k. Which means no Pepsi.
