My wife refers to mine as “not my favourite one”. I call it the “Explorer 2” because it already has that name.

It’s quite cringeworthy having all these silly names for something that is just a watch. But the one nickname I love is “Batgirl” because in annoys so many people. In my opinion it is just as childish to want to use these nicknames as it is to object to one on the grounds that it contains “girl”, which is the principle objection most people have when they say “Batman” is acceptable but “Batgirl” is not.

When this forum was full of watch geeks they used model numbers and everyone knew what they were. Nicknames are preferred now because the majority here never had a passion for watches in general they just want the latest, must-have, instagram, fashionista favourite or want to make a quick buck on an over hyped luxury item.

I knew a guy (Pat) that introduced me to his ex-girlfriend Leanne by saying (affectionately - believe me),
“This is my current Ex”.
I have a 114270 and plan to do the same ...

People are trying so hard to coin nicknames for everything. The reason why older models have nicknames is due to the fact that they were synonymous with individuals that wore it during a specific time. They are people who actually made Rolex or the model famous as result. Nowadays people are adding nicknames cause a color or hand looks like something

But feel free to call your watch, car, dog, cat, etc. whatever you like. It's yours.
nipple dial, fat lady, root beer, coke, pepsi, great white and on and on. I'm not saying I love em or hate em. Just saying there are certainly many nicknames that have no affiliation with people that wore them (there are of course those too).

It honestly made no difference to me, but after countless visits to the AD when I had SAs refer to the BLNR as the batman, and have no clue what a BLNR was, I decided it's just easier to embrace them. Everyone here knows exactly what model you're talking about when you say batman or smurf, except for Padi of course who only knows smurfs as is "a Belgian comic franchise centered on a fictional colony of small, blue, human-like creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest"

That said, (not in direct response to you 2nastie) I think people getting negatively worked up about nick names is equally silly to the actual nicknames. Who cares!?

Here’s a thought. All those who pine to be the first to come up with the most clever nickname based on appearance should post photos of themselves and let us all decide on swell nicknames for them!

Just did a search for "POLAR" on the Rolex website and it brought me both black and white at the same time.....now I'm really torn!

Phantom does indeed bring up the black one! (which I have, but now lust after the Polar!)

OP, instead of trying to come up with a new name for ExpII, focus on adding some other watches to your collection. I would start with a Hulk and Batman, then perhaps a Batgirl if you are into jubilee bands, bluesy or root beer if you are into two tones. You really need a pepsi at some point, but for now, lets focus on the above first.

By the way, i didn't know any of these names before I joined TRF ... so thank you this site for all the above watch names.

"The Daniel Craig."

Hey, if Steve McQueen never wore an Explorer, I'm allowed Daniel Craig, haha.

My wife is not a WIS- how many spouses are? She was looking over my shoulder at the Rolex website, as I was looking at my hoped-for future references. I’ve referred to it in the past as a Polar, but she said, ‘Polar Bear.’ I thought it was cute, and if I can acquire one, that’s what it will always be. YMMV

Give the whole nickname thing a rest. It makes you sound like a child.

If you want to give you own watch a nickname go ahead. There is a big difference between giving your own watch a nickname and trying to give a nickname to a specific reference just because the more desirable references have one.

To some of us people trying to give nicknames to references without them is the daily BS.

If having a little bit of light-hearted fun makes me a child, then a child I am.
You know, it's posts like this that made me take a lengthy hiatus from this forum, it's supposed to be a forum where you can learn and have a bit of fun.
Keep your negative comments to yourself.

Let me help you out.

If this is your biggest problem you don’t have one.

Relax and move on - also don’t come at me - people get hurt over these kind of things.

Be careful because you will soon know what a real problem is.

Thanks,
Joe
