Explorer I & DJ41 swap for Sky-Dweller?

I have the two watches mentioned and had the crazy thought above.

Can any Sky-Dweller owners give me a mini-review of the piece and some feedback?

Not a mini review but the Sky Dweller is the watch I turn to frequently, especially when traveling internationally - which I do all the time (especially pre Covid). It is easy to set using the rotating bezel, has had no problems, and runs precisely. I have a 6 3/4" wrist and find it quite comfortable, though I do prefer large watches. It has been rock climbing, swimming and done an African safari. I have had both the white and now the blue dial and find either very attractive, as is the black dial.

Yes but not sure if any ss skydweller owners would entertain that unless you add $$$$. I know I wouldn’t.

I'd probably do that trade. I love my black dial stainless steel Sky-Dweller.

This is great feedback, thankyou. Im particularly drawn to it as I think the GMT function is easier to read/understand that the traditional 4 hand approach.

Its also a Rolex that you dont see as often IMO. Id love the blue the white seems a classy approach too.

Id be buying from the AD at retail. My SA says they always have the white available for loyal clients - the blue would be a 6-12 month wait though.

If you’d prefer to have 1 Rolex vs 2....that’s a great piece to have. The white dial is a beauty!

Absolutely I’d do this. Love the SkyD and to be honest the Explorer I and the DJ just don’t do anything for me.

Yes. In a heart beat.

Mini review:

In terms of style the Sky Dweller kills two birds with one stone for me. Having a Sky Dweller in my collection renders a DJ unnecessary. Maybe not for purists or more obsessive collectors, but good enough for me.

As would be expected, it wears bigger than a DJ and is heavier. It is well balanced and tends not to roll over or under my oval 6.5” wrist. I have bigger and heavier watches. If I’ve been wearing something like an 11 series Sub or GMT Master, the Sky Dweller feels thick and heavy at first. But I soon forget I am wearing it, unlike many of my other big, heavy watches, which constantly make their presence felt and need to come off after a day on the wrist.

It’s such a clever watch and a part of its cleverness is in its simplicity of presentation and operation. It’s also nice (for me) that it can pass for a DJ from a distance. I like things which are sometimes not what they seem.

I went for a black dial SS which is my favourite of the SS models. I bought it grey from a well-respected London dealer. Originally, my AD told me they could get a black SS although it would take 2-4 years. Their allocation was reduced subsequently, so after trying on a TT champagne model, I ordered a TT black. The gold dial and gold fluted bezel were spectacular but too much for me.

After a year of waiting I started to get a bit itchy. At the end of 2019 another UK price increase was announced, and this is what it took to jolt me into admitting that the model I really wanted was still the SS black.

I can’t adequately describe just what a pleasure it is to wear and use the watch. It’s a special occasion waiting to be enjoyed repeatedly with a downward glance. The only thing which counts against the SS (and TT) black dial for me, is the lack of contrast with the reference time disk. The dial and disk are the same shade of black. This changes when the well-hidden sunburst effect on the black dial suddenly switches on. It’s spectacular but it doesn’t glint and twinkle readily. The blue and white SS models have a bit of contrast in the hue of the reference time disk which makes them just a smidge easier to quickly pick out against the dial.

I also like the white dial very much. Nothing against the blue SS but I have a few blue dial sunburst models already and the grey premium on the blue SS Sky Dweller is huge. I think that the YG indices and hands of the TT white model work better. I think white RG looks amazing and work better still. The SS white, for me at least, doesn’t have enough contrast between the dial and WG furniture. A purely personal preference.

When I dropped in my Z-Blue for a warranty repair the AD pulled a TT white one out of the safe. Just arrived that week in their first post lockdown v1 consignment. Needless to say, I was unable to give it back.

I’ve never met a Sky Dweller I didn’t like and am fortunate to own two of the three I really just after. I like that I can walk around with one of Rolex’s most advanced complications which also looks like something my grandad might have passed down to me.

Nice review .. I agree with all said above.. I’ve recently purchased a fourth sky dweller for my collection.. trending towards having multiple variants of the watches I really love at the moment.

I’ve worn my ss sky dweller for over a year now pretty much every day, I’ve owned a lot of nice and expensive watches predominantly Rolex and this is the watch I I still enjoy as much as when I saw a photo of it for the first time and blindly buying it.

Thanks so much for your through and concise review :) Do you have any pics of the two pieces to share?

I can't comment on the potential swap because I am not particularly knowledgable about Rolex and the different models. I also have no interest in 'value' and what things might be worth.

But I am a big fan of mechanisms - the more complex the better. I am also a fan of bracelet watches that can be worn 24/7, the Sky Dweller ticks those boxes and it's why I bought it. I also slimmed down my collection (Patek and JLC's sold after many years of ownership) to just 3 watches... but only wear the Sky Dweller and wear it for all activities - it's not babied in any way. It's a Rolex.

One of my remaining watches is an Omega Planet Ocean (GMT) - the Rolex is a lot smaller! The Rolex does not look or feel big on me at all...

When I first bought it, I was surprised to see it running 2 seconds a day slow, watches normally run fast in my experience. So I now take it off at night and leave it dial up and I haven't adjusted it since January. Honestly! It's currently 4 seconds fast. Self regulation is cheating, a tiny bit, but I'm impressed with the accuracy all the same.

The annual calendar function is obviously faultless and I really like the complication - a private pleasure. I can't read the GMT ring without glasses - so not too useful for me... therefore the cyclops is a benefit. But the watch is not as instantly legible as other watches I have owned. Indoors I have to peer at it to see the time - I have a blue dial.

The unique way the watch is adjusted was the killer reason I bought it. So simple in a 'd'uh, why didn't anyone else think of that?' kind of way! It's also pretty bulletproof in terms of when and how it can be adjusted - forwards, backwards, any time of day. I would chiefly use the skipping hour/local time adjustment and therefore never really have to stop the mechanism - and the date just once a year on March 1st.

As a 'one watch' (gardening, swimming, golf, with a suit) it works perfectly for me.

Another fantastic overview of the watch - thankyou. do you notice how high it sits on the wrist? as it looks fairly tall on photos.

Do you have any pics of it you can upload?

The SkyD is just an amazing engineered marvel with all the Rolex DNA.

It wears well on smaller wrists because of the lug curvature.
Nice chunk of metal, feels solid and thickness is fitting with the over all dimensions.

I’d go for it

I've had my Blue SS for a few weeks now and it's just great in every way. Comfortable, easy to read, movement is spectacular. I stayed up to see the date change from 11/30 to 12/1 (skipping the 31st) and seeing the month indicator change. It was really cool to see and worked perfectly!

I like the Explorer and many DJ combinations, I can't really give insight on whether you should give those up. But if you do trade those two on one watch I think the SkyD in any color would be the one to get.

I don't find it sits high at all - but it depends what you're comparing it with. Compared to my Omega, it's positively slimline!

The SkyD is a serious watch compared to what you currently have

Yes I would do this swap.

The Sky-D is a stunning watch (mine is the white/silver dial version)
