Hmm...don't know enough about forum posts to tell if I'm being ghosted or just boring.

I noticed that if I hold the dial just right under 10X magnification, I can make out the faint outline of depth rating text a fraction of a millimeter under the visible text of the depth rating. Although hard to make out, the "f" in "ft." looks much more traditional. So do the shapes of the numbers. As yet, I don't see anything similar around the chronometer text. Is this what was meant as "washed". Is this a washed original dial? an outright fake dial? (he asked with ever diminishing hope of an answer)

So far, the only friend request I've received was from a nice woman named "helena" who suggested I do naughty things to her. However, she was listed as "banned" before I could respond.......wait...you don't suppose that was "spam" do you?....but she seemed so.... friendly......

Well, I did catch it sneaking out at night. You know, smoking, drinking, that sort of thing.

I appreciate the bluntness of your reply. Perhaps you'd be willing to expand your concept a bit. Is it no good because it's a lousy fake that does not belong on the watch? Or is it just a "less desirable" refinished original dial?
Thanks for your reply.

I think you already have your answers. Just read back through the thread. It all seems pretty clear to me.

Got it. My dial is washed, wonky & no good.

I'm sure you know that decades ago, people had dials refinished for non-nefarious purposes. I would like to know if anyone can determine if it is a refinished original or an outright fake.

I'm also curious about the movement.
My apologies for being so thick. If seeking information on a Rolex is not the purpose of the Rolex Forums, please let me know. I shall bother you no more.

Most likely the dial blank itself is original, but a view of the back side of the dial would be definitive.

You seem unhappy with the responses you received (or have not received), but I don't know why. Nobody here is paid to give information or is obligated to do so, and I feel that many members have voluntarily provided their expertise. In your place, I would be quite pleased that people too the time to voluntarily share their expertise.

Nobody likes to bash a watch more than necessary, so I doubt that you are going to get dozens of people chiming in to repeat that the dial has been refinished and relumed. If people strongly disagree with that opinion, they might express that. I don't think that acting defensive, sarcastic, or entitled is going to encourage more people to participate. Just read the comments, absorb them, and say thank you. That's what I would do.

Thank you

Consider me properly chastised. If you consider my responses anything but gracious, I apologize. I think almost every post I've made contains the phrase "thank you" & I've meant it sincerely.

This is probably just got not a good fit.

Thanks to everyone who contributed I am genuinely grateful & you've helped me quite a bit. I never meant to hurt anyone's feelings or take your free advice for granted. I guess I am the kid with the "doesn't play well with others" note.

And now.....I just quietly fade away.....who was that guy?...now we'll never know........

No need to fade away. I'm sure most everybody who offered their opinion is still very interested in seeing what it looks like after the restoration. Even with the deficiencies pointed out by others, it's still a nice authentic watch. And yes, from what I have read on this very forum, it was quite natural for the dials to be refinished in the early years. Your last (hopefully not last) response seeks more information, and I am quite sure the community is more than wiling to oblige with some thoughtful responses. I think Dan was pointing out that your initial inquiries were addressed. My own watch has a Tiffany stamp and there is no amount of evidence (other than sales receipt and accouterments) that will convince any collector or WIS on this forum that it is real without papers. Such is life but it's still my watch and since it was my Father's, I don't intend to part with it. Good luck with your very interesting Sub, I would wear it with pride.

Well done, Dan. Your response was pure class.

Agree with the others here, the dial text doesn't look right to me either. Can you share where you source this from?

Ehuh, "watch snobs" or enthusiasts are give or take. Don't get offended. The idea of vintage watch collecting is to get the most original peice. Even if it's outsourced from other watches from the same period or refurbished like an old painting. It's still being maintained.

I happened to like cleaned up indices and hour and minute hands that aren't completely rusty. Picture a pie. At least if your watch is 90% original looking it's OK. Unpolished or not overpolished cases and original dials is very important. The watch has to stay in the period if you take from other watches.

And rule number one. If it's a grail watch and you plan on keeping it. You can make it a franken watch like putting a better bracelet on it etc.
