Cellini or Lange Saxonia?

Gents,

I'm in the process of simplifying my collection. I've gone from 5 steel sports Rolexes down to an Explorer. I'm looking to add a nice dress watch and I have it down to the Rolex Cellini Time or the A. Lange Saxonia Thin. Both watches meet my criteria of:

39mm or below
No date
Precious metal

I've tried on the Cellini and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately I've not seen the Lange in person yet. I won't purchase one until I've tried on both.

Which do you think pairs better with the Explorer? If anyone owns these watches, can you comment on what you like or dislike about them?

They both have an MSRP of around $15,000 in the US. If anyone has some real world advice on the best place to purchase and pricing information, I'd really appreciate it. I'm guessing either of these can be had at a decent discount because they are not steel sports watches.

A Lange and it's not even close. Maybe because I'm not a big fan of the Cellini line-up..?

You should definitely try on the Lange first as it wears very small and very thin (which is both good/bad depending on what you're looking for in the watch).

I originally wanted a Saxonia Thin, well I still do, but after I tried the 1815 (38.5mm and a bit thicker) I kind of fell in love with that instead. It's unfortunately also a bit more $ :/

It has considerably more wrist-presence though, which is why I kinda preferred it.

Definitely check it out on the wrist first.

Lange, not even close.

Rolex does good sports watches, particularly in SS. PM, dress watches, or high horology you'd get far better bang for buck elsewhere.

Really not comparison - the ALS Saxonia is the clear winner here. Try one on and handle it and I'm sure you'll agree!

Thanks for the feedback! I absolutely love the 1815 line but they are definitely out of my price range. I will absolutely try them on once the pandemic slows down. It's too bad because I have nothing but time off until January and it's only a five hour drive to Dallas.

Do you have any insight into how often a Lange should be serviced and what the approximate cost would be? I'm planning to wear this watch 2-3 days per week.

I’m a Lange fan but that Saxonia does nothing for me. I like the looks of the Cellini better.

Wow. There is some serious passion for Lange. That comes through in all the videos I've watched on YouTube. But even more so in the comments after the video. I've never seen more universal praise for a brand. I cannot wait to see them in person!!!

So true though - consider the Saxonia with the outsized date as well. I know you wanted a time only but coming from sports watches this may add just that little extra.

One day though, one day. Either a Saxonia thin or the 1815. Can't go wrong with either one.

ALS recommend a service schedule of 5-7 years but I don't see why you couldn't stretch it to 10-12 depending on usage and how it runs.

I've seen 30+ year old watches still run without a service. Of course once the service comes more parts will need replacing and it could get costly. 500-1200 for a Saxonia thin service is what I'd expect.

these watches look very different so I’m surprised they fulfill the same criteria, or maybe it’s suggesting you need additional criteria to narrow the list and compare more similar watches. the ALS is far more minimalist and note it doesn’t have a seconds hand, something that would drive me crazy.

I’m a biased owner I want to add a light colored dial on strap and as I look at PP or JLC, I keep gravitating towards another offering from ALS despite not wanting to be overly redundant in a very small collection.

And, yes, I would highly recommend looking at the Saxonia outsize date...so versatile in my opinion. Again, biased owner...

Warning sign. Watchbox is a reseller. They can have more influence with Lange
They have NO INFLUENCE with Rolex
No one does
Thats why they don’t push Rolex
Rolex Cellini gets little respect

Thanks for the feedback on servicing. So I could give in 10 years, then drop a grand. Not bad at all! I’m sure the super complicated models are pretty pricey.

Lange sell for 30% off brand new grey and resale at even less. Completely not hot or hyped. FP Journe fits your description better.
