Gold - thinking out loud!

As per the title, I’ve thought long and hard about finally getting a gold watch. I’ve considered it for a decade or more but always (incorrectly) kind of thought I’m too young to wear it. I’m now 50 so maybe I’ve waited too long!

Anyway, also in the title - I’m thinking out loud. I say that because I’m unlikely to actually go for it, but I figure some of you AP owners might be able to give some unbiased ideas or suggestions. I did ask the question on the Rolex section a few weeks back . . .

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=778172

It’s kind of changed my views a bit in that I’ve ruled out certain models. I’ve also decided I’d want the full gold bracelet experience and not a leather strap. I’d need to sell to do this (which is why I probably won’t do it). I’d put up to £10,000 towards it, the rest will have to come from my existing collection. In my head I’m here . . . .

A. Sell my VC overseas and buy the new full gold option. As well as the cash I’d also have to sell one of my Rolexes.

B. Day date. Never really considered one before. They are really growing on me. Cash and two Rolexes.

C. AP. The 15500 in pink gold is stunning. I tried one on a year ago and wow. Even more so the 26331 chrono with blue dials in pink gold. Price wise not sure either of these would be remotely realistic, especially the chrono as I’d have to sell my 15500 and at least two Rolexes, or my VC to get near to this. Not sure I’d feel comfortable having such a value in one watch.

Right now my AP is beating everything else hands down and I’d love a blue 15500 which would make me retHink the whole idea. Unlikely maybe but who knows.

I’m rambling here so am I mad? Any suggestions? Here’s what I’ve got for reference (I wouldn’t sell the Daytona, or sky and I’d only consider selling the AP for another one, but unlikely).

All your current watches are pretty much sport/professional models except the Sky-D.

If you’re open to some diversification, I’d suggest option B to add a bit of dress watch into the mix.

I’d add the Day Date now and decide if you like it

You can always move a piece or two later on if needed

for me this one is the only answer. you get three straps. the DD 40 doesnt even have micro adjust. but it is your $ and your call.

DD first and VC second. Love the AP but a huge scratch magnet.

Everyone's wishes are different, but mine - honed after numerous experiences - are:

1. Stainless watches on metal or rubber for everyday, sports and multi-day travel.
2. Gold watches on leather straps for the evening (if more formal affairs planned).

Works for me, anyway.

15500 RG all the way. AP has the best RG mix ever. My second choice would be the VC - the versatility with the straps and bracelet make it a great all rounder

I will confess that the step up from mostly SS to gold AP was a huge psychological gut punch once I saw the payment. Just a big psychological jump for one piece.

Anyways, if it were me, I’d swap either the VC or AP to its gold equivalent based on the collection. So in this case to 15500OR.

However, if you had such a pull to the blue dial OR, then go for it. I find myself really only wearing 2-3 watches anyways once you introduce the first 50K watch to the collection.

Trade 15500ST to 15500OR with full RG bracelet

Or

Trade some of your Rolexes for 116508 with Green dial

AP 15500 on bracelet is on a different level I would choose that 100 percent. I own the AP and its incredible and I have numerous PM Rolex watches.

If you go OR in the AP line, I think it is tough to beat the 15202OR blue dial and would be my choice over the 15500.

15500OR all the way. Not even a question (for me). And age is only a number! Got mine at 32 and easily is my most worn, in rotation with my 15407. Go for the gold!

option b or option a as second choice. For me 15500 is simply too big, so I dont like it in gold version either, even worst.

15500 OR is beautiful if you can get the 15202 version even better. only 15407 OR is better and that's in a whole other league. AP all the way for me even though the datona with green dial is cool and the vacheron is also nice but doesnt really come close to AP in my opinon.

Totally agree! Did you go grey for your 15407? Such an incredible watch, they have shot up in value the last month or two.

This is exactly what I was going to post, I think you could get one too with your existing relationship with AP.

Fortunate enough to stay local and grab it through the BH boutique. Such an impressive watch with its depth and architecture. Easily could go down to it as my only if I needed to. Curious to see it in its ceramic form!

The gold vacheron offers the versatility to not always wear it on the bracelet.....That's a really nice option to have and may lead to more wrist time, or at least the ability to wear it in multiple situations

If you are going to go gold then I'd probably get an AP RO with bracelet, I've had AP, PP and Rolex all gold and the AP is that bit special.

Love everyone I've worked with up at BH. I didn't put a deposit down on mine, just paid in full when it arrived.

I'm up there fairly regularly - next time I'm up if you're around we should grab a beer! (If we're allowed ...)

100%, looks like you are a car guy too, would be great to talk watches and cars. Shoot me a PM next time you are in LA.

I would sell the black sub and either the VC or AP and upgrade to a full gold version. I would lean towards the AP gold as it's the best in the business IMO.
