Can you help pick a panerai with those criteria?

Lately I’ve been intrigued by the design and history of panerai and would like to add a first and probably only panerai to my collection

Here are my MUST have

1- sandwich dial (very unique to panerai)
2- Luminor (I like the unique crown guard)
3- 44mm (I have a 7.6” wrist)
4- has 12, 6, 9 (and 3 if no date)
5- a simple model that captures the history
6- HACKING

Here are my want have (but could be convinced otherwise)

1- marina (I like the Pam second hand)
2- stainless steel (don’t like very light watches)
3- display back

Neutral to the following, please convince me one at or another

1- DATE
2- GMT function
3- dial color
4- automatic or manual wind

Thought of the 1313 or 1313 but the movement fuss scared me!
Thought of the 233, it’s real nice, the 112 but hard to get a decent example....... others I have considered but don’t know much about panerai yet

I appreciate any help, especially with pictures!

Welcome to the dark side

I’d encourage you to visit your nearest boutique/AD and try on all the sizes. With a 7.6” wrist you’ll have no problem wearing the 47’s which IMO is the size to own.

I have a 7” wrist and wear a 47 Rad. It’s actually more comfortable and sits better on my wrist than the larger Rolex divers, due to its cushion case shape and flat caseback. YMMV.

A PAM422 would look great on your wrist and meets your criteria (except it’s 47 which is true to historical roots).

Good luck, so many great references to choose from

111, 112 or 233, 422 (you can probably pull off 47mm if you wanted)

As above my choice would either be the 422 or 233.

422 offers 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 of your must haves. Of your want haves it offers 1, 2 & 3. It has a huge display case back and while the movement isn't adorned with the highest level of finishing I sure enjoy looking at the enormous movement. The only thing is the case is 47mm but your wrist size isn't far off mine so I don't think you would have an issue with it.

The 233 offers similarly offers most if not all of your must and want haves and also offers the GMT function again with a display case back but with an 8 day power reserve compared to the 3 days on the 422.

Both are manual wind and I think the Luminor is the best model from Panerai as manual as you don't have the worry of having to screw and unscrew the crown to wind, simply unlock the crown guard wind and close and you maintain the 100m water resistance.

You wouldn't go far wrong with either of these 2.

PAM 233, PAM 270 would be 2 top recommendations (especially a PAM 233 dot).

Don't be scared of 47mm, you can easily pull it off with your wrist size. Go to an AD and try one, you'll be surprised.

Hacking implies seconds

If you want sandwich dial and “all” the numerals 3/6/9/12

If you want seconds and all the numerals... there are no references at 44mm

Given your wrist size I would go for 47mm;

That being said; two routes I believe

1) 44mm auto with date, but no “3”... ie like 312

2) 47mm manual with all numerals and seconds: 127, 217 (destro), 368 8 day Titanium version (my personal bias)

Or give up hacking/seconds: 112, etc

Good luck!
