At this point, I think it's the black dial Explorer II (5 and 6 digit) and the two tone YG GMT.

Modern - I'd say Explorer, Air King or Milgauss.

Vintage - I'd say 14060, 14060M, 5513, 16710, and if you want undervalued rare, I'd say late Z and M serial 16570 with 3186 movement. Go for one with highest condition, service history, box/papers a bonus.

The word "Value" and "Rolex" do not go in the same sentence in this current market.

Gray market is thriving and flipping Rolex's left right and centre. Its a dream for them.

The gray dealer I'm close to said he has never made this much money in his life. The margins are smaller but the volume is insane.

Nice for maybe the value of the pieces in ownership but to do business is not bringing fun anymore. To be completely honest, I am actually sceptical about the Rolex AD's and the Grey dealers (read: greedy dealers)

I would agree with you on this one. I usually go through my AD but he is telling me a 18 month wait for a DJ41 with 25% down. To make matters worse he can not guarantee anything even after 18 months.
So going grey allows for next day pick up at 10% above MSRP for this model. I don’t have a problem with that. Any of the super popular sports models commend huge added costs so I wouldn’t go that route.

I want perfection, factory warranty, etc. Grey would be like buying a used car for me... ain't happening, so I pay more in many cases in life, I suppose...but my stuff is tight.

I am just like you concerning pristine new watches. I have purchased many watches over the years at greys dealers. The watches at greys may even be handled less the the one you buy at the AD because greys usually only have the watch your interested in for viewing. My grey only removes one watch at a time from the vault to avoid robbery. If you want to see more then one you have to request and only if they know you well. Watches at the AD are handled just as much as not more. My AD let’s me try on models that are waiting to be collected even though they are not for sale.

[QUOTE=Santiago32;11267746I love the SkyD but I feel like the DJII is the largest I can go.[/QUOTE]

The Sky Dweller is one of the bigger Rolex watches but it isn't a big watch. And it's comfortable. If you're sensitive about case width versus wrist size, then there will be a limit that you won't want to go over. We all draw the line somewhere. Every watch I have looks perfect on me and every watch I want will look perfect!

I do agree a DJ41 (of course, only if you like it) represents the closest to AD purchase when taking tax into account. Also, it is a sweet, classic, and quintessentially Rolex purchase.
THIS, is exactly what I was going to write. Get what you want by searching for the best value for that particular watch. Prices at grays vary depending on the watch condition, year, what they want to sell quickly, and what they paid for it to the person from whom they bought it. So, you can be rewarded with a good deal by checking around. When I decide THE watch that I want to add, I search until I find that watch, which in my eyes, is the best value at the time I buy.

There are reasons why certain watches seem to be good value compared to others. But that is comparing apples to oranges. If you really want what you consider to be a better-value model, then you should be in good shape. Nothing wrong with those at all. But if that is not the case, get the one you really want, even paying over MSRP to get it on your wrist today rather than waiting months (years) later playing the AD game.

I like you can't get on AD waitlists because I can't compete with the high-rollers who spend enough to get what might land in the ADs' safes in the back months (years) later. I get laughed at when I ask about "the waitlist" and a "Thanks for stopping by."

Finally, I prefer to buy used. When I have adjusted my collection over the years, I have found that I take less of a "hit" when I trade in watches that I did NOT "drive brand new" off of the dealer's parking lot, so to speak.

Good luck with your search to find the right one. Half of the fun is searching, and the other half is wearing.

I think the SD 43 is an excellent value on the gray market right now. Not selling at a significant premium to MRSP

Grey market is critical. Wait until you try and sell a watch privately or want to buy a discounted piece and have it be a stress free experience...

Not on the gray market, but the best deals are likely 5 digit subs, sea dwellers, and explorer I.

Sadly 5 digit subs and sea dwellers have shot up to crazy prices. Good examples are around 9k and going up to 10k

MSRP:

market price:

^^^That is for the used discontinued model as shown with the older dial and hands. That price for the pre 2017 model as shown is actually holding its value very well from its original msrp.

The new model is riding the SS wave so buying it anything close to msrp is a good find. I just went through the last year monitoring it before buying one.

How do you define value?

I'd say Daytona and Pepsi (+a couple other 'overpriced' watches) are your best value for money. You're buying a watch today that is 2x msrp -- but if we look at today's grey prices as time 0 and some time in the future as time 1, the Daytona and Pepsi will probably have appreciated more than any of the watches you can get below retail or close to retail in the grey market. They are probably the ones that will hold price more even if there is a disruption or shift in the market.

Msrp is the face value of a Rolex watch. If anything starts to go south in Rolex land, the most hyped (artificially inflated) watch’s will fall first and the furthest since they are the farthest from their msrp. This “super hype” period of time is extremely recent and short in the grand scheme of the Rolex timeline.

Think Sub no dates are still pretty reasonable relative for the value of the time saved.

228206 can be found under retail. Not surprising I guess as it's a smaller market.

Watch buying used to be an event for me. Maybe I was traveling for work or pleasure stop by in a store and see a piece that caught my eye. Then I'd always associate that trip with that piece. Now you sit around begging someone to sell you a watch or call a GM dealer and pay way over retail. I feel like whenever I would see that watch I'd just think about the hoops I had to jump through to get it and it would ruin the experience for me. Sadly I'm getting close to saying bye to Rolex. I don't buy watches because they will be worth more later. I buy them to collect them and wear them and enjoy them. I buy them for ME not for others, and its starting to feel like Rolex is not a brand that fits those parameters anymore...

You and many of our long time enthusiast. The brand has morphed into representing something very different than it was a decade ago.

If you can grab an explorer 214270 for under 8k, then I think this is the best value Rolex (and possibly the best Rolex period) that you can buy.
