Tried this today. Unfortunately it really wasn’t for me. The tasting notes they list sounded great but I really don’t feel they were that prevalent. I guess I was lured in by the cool bottle. Lesson learned I suppose

There’s a lot under $200 that’s very good quality stuff. It just depends on your tastes. I’m primarily a scotch guy so my under $200 top 3 staples would be

1. Yoichi (Nikka)
2. Ardberg
3. Laugavulin 16

Other notable mentions would be
Balveinie 14 Caribbean Cask
Yamazaki 12

I would say that what one person prefers isn’t necessarily what another person likes, there are so many different whiskies that you really should try tasting as many as possible before spending $200 on something that you may not like.

Been drinking the Jefferson’s Ocean voyage 17 the past few weekends. It’s good, but for the price point there are several bourbons I prefer. It does have a bit of a nice salty note to it which is unique, and overall the flavor is smooth but fairy mild with minimal aftertaste. Blanton’s is still my favorite all around bourbon - not the absolute best there is, but really amazing at its price point, and I do love the slightly sweet toasted caramel flavor it imparts.

I returned from deployment back in November and had some fun bottles waiting for me. Here are a few of the standouts this far...

Also, "whiskey/whisky" is a very, very, very broad term with multiple definitions. Asking for "the best under $200" is like asking a watch forum "what's the best watch under $5,000?" You're going to get different brands and styles, and everyone has their own taste.

My recommendation: buy a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 (Bourbon), a bottle of Macallan 12 (Scotch), and a bottle of Redbreast 12 or Teeling (Irish). Those will cover your bases and give you a good introduction into the different styles, and you're not out too much dough if you don't like one (or two...) (well under $200 for all 3 bottles).

My last thought: Don't judge a bottle by its price tag. There's lots of great whiskey for $30 a bottle (or less) and lots of over-rated, mediocre whiskey for $150.

A few more finds from the last few months.

The Jefferson’s Presidential 21 was a great price in an auction, as was the Kentucky Owl Batch 7 bourbon and the Batch 1 Rye.

I think the Horse Soldier barrel strength is my new Go-To wheater, since I can actually find it. Maker’s hasn’t been agreeing with my palate lately.

Frey Ranch is a local Farm-to-Glass distillery in my neck of the woods, their Rye is phenomenal.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean about ‘good price’ for the KO??
There’s a couple bottles at my local grocery and I haven’t been too compelled to get it; I’m unsure what batch number it is.

As with anything, it's all relative, right? So the Batch 7 was released in 2017; all of the KO numbered Batches (bourbons and ryes) are one-off batch runs, so whatever is released is it. Batch 8 was the first national release, so I picked it up, then got 9 and 10. Batch 1 Rye was fairly easy to find in the auctions (it wasn't a national release, but Batch 2 Rye was).

The Batch 7 bourbon I snagged for under $250 in an auction, and I got two Batch 1 Ryes (also 2017 release, it got 93 points from Whisky Advocate, and is damn delicious, if I do say...) for less than $170 each.

The MSRP on those went up to about $300 and $200 for the bourbon and rye, respectively. I actually enjoy the Batch 2 rye better than Batch 1, and Batch 8 bourbon has been my favorite so far of the ones I've tried (haven't opened batch 7 yet).

I personally think if you can find the bourbons for around $270 that's a BUY all day long. Batch 4 Rye just shot up to $300 MSRP, but I found one for $270, so I bought it to complete the vertical.

I have the Confiscated, as well, but it's not the same quality as the Batch release bourbons. I think TheDak stated before that it's "$60 bourbon with a $120 price tag" and he's not too far off; it's lower proof and easier to drink, but at that price, I'm buying something else.

I hope that helps clarify a little bit...

I bought this set for the holidays - only delicacies. Everyone will find something for themselves.

Great and thanks for the info!
I’ll do a little closer looking when I get back to the grocery

Nice full proof tasting. I wish I had something more productive than they are all tasty.
