1966 Bart Simpson $25000
Hi,
This Rolex w/Bart Simpson dial is being sold for $25,000. Hands are relumed. Does that mean they won't shine along with the dial? Dial has some aging. Opinions please. |

The dial looks like it has rust and the happy shiney new bevels cut into the case dont go with the dial. They should have left the lugs as is with such a beat up old dial.
The way that case looks I can almost bet it has had a bunch of laser welding done to it.

I don’t like the dial or recut case. The post with other example was better, even with a couple plot chips and Mk3 insert.

$25K for a rusted, cracked dial with relumed hands (and the lume plots aren’t going to be shining. Some of the original 1966 examples have lume that will still glow briefly, but it’s the kind that has a different shade to them)? That’s...pretty steep.

Many Bart's have that odd crazing on the lacquer that's visually evident on the coronet. The hands may react to UV like the plots, but likely fade differently. This dial is an example that some may call "tropical", when the brown area's appear to be corrosion due to moisture damage and that's not desirable.

This could be a zinc sulfide dial, in which case the re-lumed hands would certainly not react the same to UV. But frankly, that seems to be a minor consideration overall.

Steep price for a completely rebuilt and "color matched" lume set.
Seems like it has been built specifically for the purpose of sales and not as a collector piece.

Whoever relumed the hands did it pretty well, which would suggest they had enough vintage expertise to not make them luminous. But you could just ask the seller.
Case detailing looks like the LA guys. Very well done, but not for some people (as stated above). Dial looks water-damaged rather than just aged. The bracelet is also newer - the original in the early-mid 60s would have been a rivet model. That's not a big issue as long as the replacement bracelet is correct for a Sub. 25 grand is a bit optimistic, but not ridiculous. A gilt MF 5513 in perfect condition would be in the 30s at least. Sellers tend to build in a negotiation margin, so they'll probably come down on the price. If I were you I'd save my pennies and keep looking. Much of the fun is in the hunt. |

Looking over the internet. Seems to be that since Bart Simpson dials were made for such a short period of time (I believe only a year or two) prices are pretty high. And although there are many options out there, this models in particular have, like, these imperfect dials. Each ages or corrodes differently, but it happens apparently.
Thank you for your obervations |

Love the dial. Don't understand case restoration.... be happy the dozen of you who have unused originals. If the watch was used for the intended purpose and was serviced locally and the jeweler took to "freshening" up the case.... let it be. It is a survivor and was used.

I like that dial, wish they didn't mess with the case though.
