What is a collection?

Having read way too many threads on this forum I constantly see references to collections -- recently I saw a post about 3+ watches being a collection. Not sure I agree..

Is it a mindset that you have a collection or are a collector? Can you have a one piece collection? Is owning two watches having a collection or just having a pair of watches?

Where does a collection begin 1, 2, 3? Or 4+?

Although I feel that you could call one watch a collection based on mindset, the verbiage itself implies more than one based off of the definition of the word.

Just one carefully curated watch. There are several collectors who downsized from several to just one, doesn’t make them any less of a collector.

According to Merriam-Webster a collection is "an accumulation of objects gathered for study, comparison, or exhibition or as a hobby" and "Group, a collection of symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches, and joint pain". So zero watches or one watch are not a collection. Obviously. Two are just a pair, not a group, because a group is commonly formed of more than two items. For that reason, you need three watches to consider yourself a collector IMO, but I'm cool if someone with just a watch thinks he owns a collection, or even zero watches on his imaginary collection.

A collection by definition is a group of objects where a group is two or more things.

Therefore a ‘1 watch collection’ should be referred to as ‘my watch’.

Got 2 (or more) watches? That can count as a collection.

I think anyone with 2 or more watches calls it a collection but I see a whole lot more thought and purpose in some than I do in others.

Done right its a very personal thing that takes homology, personality, lifestyle and style into account. The ones that disappoint seem to be little more that the top 6 hard to get referances.

If you are a real WIS, one great watch of whatever means a ton to YOU is enough to qualify as a collection to me.

This.

There is nothing wrong with being a one-watch owner. I personally wish I could become one, but alas, the lure of various functions and complications is simply too great.

But one watch does not make a collection, and I'm shocked that people continue to suggest such a thing exists.

A collection is, by definition, a group of things or people. You go deeper into what a collection is based off how said multiple elements relate to one another. Perhaps you only collect dive watches and the differing factor is the font, or the layout, or additional features. Perhaps you collect watches that have NOTHING to do with each other except the time. Whatever it is, great- but in that collection are various elements which have some sort of hypothetical relationship among themselves.

One element doesn't do that.

I have a Submariner and a Speedmaster. If I count my Apple Watch, then I suppose I have a collection too.

Yes OP, the correct answer is three. If you want to show a visitor your collection, they will be stupefied if there are only two watches. They may not be confused if there are three.
