Taking an Ebay Watch to a Dealer for Service

How do the dealers feel about it when you bring a watch purchased in a private sale or on Ebay into the store for authentication, sizing or service? Is this considered in poor taste? Has anyone done this?

Thanks,
Rich

some of them are going to care and some are not.. as long its AUTHENTIC rolex watch.. dont worry about it..but most of the dealers prefer to purchase the watch through authorized dealers...

You also have the option of sending it to the Rolex Service Centers. I bought mine from a friend and when it needed service, I sent it to the Dallas RSC.

Not a problem
Authentication, service or appraisal is within the customer service
that he provides and a big part of a jewelers (money making) business
So go ahead without fear, remember... YOU are King in there.

I do it all the time

As long as the AD doesn't find peanuts inside the watch you should be fine.

As long as it's authentic, they won't care. My advice is to contact the RSC directly (either Dallas or New York). You'll pay for it one way or another.

Sizing should be free, most likely for authentication of the watch you will be charged. I would call ahead to see if they do this and when. My AD has a person who floats between their stores who does all their appraisals.

This is where purchasing from an unknown person on eBay or anywhere else becomes a sticky wicket.

What if the watch has been reported stolen to Rolex unbeknown to the seller or you?

You take the timepiece into Rolex and they will confiscate it if it has been. I wish there were a way to confirm that a timepiece is not on their list prior to purchasing it, but there is not.

Now here comes the morality of this situation. Do you take it into the RSC with the chance that it may be confiscated, or do you take it to a watchmaker that you know cannot check that list?

I paid a local dealer $60 to authenticate a new DeepSea.
I just had them perform a visual inspection- took about 5 min.

Had I (and the seller) been willing to wait 2 weeks, they would have done an exhaustive confirmation and opened the case, validated serial numbers, etc. This probably makes more sense where vintage collector's pieces are concerned.

BTW- this was Razny Jewelers in Addison, IL. I'm quite happy with them. Derek did the inspection.

I was surprised, however, that many of the other dealers I spoke with wouldn't do it.
