Explorer II 16570 vs 216570 collectability

I have an Explorer II 16570 in white that I am considering trading up for a black dial 216570.

Other than the size and color differences, I was wondering about peoples thoughts on long term collectability.

I guess the 216570 (now replaced, was produced a shorter amount of time), although tastes seem to be going for smaller watches so perhaps the 16570 is a better long term investment?

Prices currently seem all over the place to its hard for me to say where things are going.

A white dial Explorer II is a keeper for me and a nice complement to many other black dial models in the Rolex catalog. I might add a black dial 226570 some day.

Wear what you enjoy and don't worry about long term investment. Invest in what makes you happy.

Keep the 16750 and pick the 2 series up in addition. You will regret letting go of the five digit..... if you find you you don't prefer it in a couple years.... sell it.

Thanks for the input. Prices on the Explorer II went crazy the last year. Like double, but I guess thats most Rolex. Seems like the 16570 and 216570 are selling pretty close at this point.

Explorer II 16570 vs 216570 collectability

That’s my take on this! Utterly ridiculous value increase but it is what it is. That’s my watch by the way - and it’s a keeper regardless of this.

16570 all the way. Like everyone said, it’s up to you and your preference though

16570... The last tool watch ever made by Rolex. It's the one.

The 16570 is certainly the model of choice

I have a larger wrist at 7.5-7.75 and have always preferred the 42 mm Explorer II over the 40 mm version. Both are nice watches but collectability wise I think it has a lot to do with where you are in the 40 mm version. If you got it before some of the craziness started for about 5k you are sitting right in the watch. If you payed the going rate for the five digit you are close on the 42mm for value. It comes down to which one you prefer and which one wears better.

This is a good point. I paid under $3,000 for my 16570 and under $6,000 for my 42mm. I honestly don’t think I would buy either one at the current prices!

What is it about the 216570 exactly that doesn't make it a proper tool watch?

Why has everything to do with Rolex watches today all come down to so called investments collectability stuff. What wrong with owning a buying the watch you want to own and wear. And if after wearing for many years hopefully in good health, then if you have to sell, the watch gave you a good return or kept its value over those years of wearing. Think of that as a bonus on those years of owing and wearing the watch, thats what owing a Rolex should be about its not all about £££$$$€€€€.

Ahh. Too big. Non drilled lugs. Classic bracelet. Hollow end links. In the end like all Rolex watches, the gradual refinements gradually alter the watch.

Asking which is the better investment is the wrong question pertaining to these two watches. They are worth about the same on the preowned market with the newest model fetching better prices. I’d do the trade. It’s an upgrade if you prefer the modern Rolex watches. Better movement, better bracelet and more modern case and appeal. Buy what you want and enjoy it.

Thanks for the input. In trying the newer model on, I was really surprised how different it is. Much more flashy and less stealth. The 16570 seems totally under the radar and a different look.

I guess my question was really less about investment and more about if having to put c. $3500 into a trade was reasonable and with the market all over the place its hard to determine, and also if things will stabilize in the the near term and the two models will end up at the same price point. Seems like maybe not and that they will settle in about the same price as time goes on...

I say the black dial 216570 for two reasons:

1) Matte Black Dial
2) Phantom Hands

Sadly these two distinctive and very cool features inherited from the original 1655 are now gone on the new black dial 226570.

Never understood the GMT-MASTER hand on 16570 instead of EXPLORER II orange 24-hour hand.
