Considering Patek 3800 Nautilus

Does anyone own the 3800 nautilus blue dial? I am considering adding it to my collection but not sure if the size will be too small. My wrist is 6.5 and size wise a Daytona or Pepsi is the biggest my wrist can handle. For comparison I have a 39 mm 15300 Royal Oak and that fits perfect. 41 mm RO is too big for me. Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

It will be a little on the smaller size so it will depend on your preference. I have a 6.5” wrist and own both a 5712 and 39mm ROC so here are some reference photos

Too small for what? a 5711 it is not. A 5712 is much bigger.

And wrist circumference does not take into account the shape of your wrist (flat/round). Best to try one on y o u r wrist, even wristshots of other people are not really going to help.

I bet it will sit nicely on your wrist, slide under the cuff easily, as it should. But you cannot wear it on your wrist bone as people would do it with Submariner sized (and above) watches.

I always thought the 5711 and the 5712 were the same size. Is the 5712 bigger? I haven’t seen either one in person.

As for the 3800, I have seen it and I have a 6 1/4 wrist. it was small. You would be shocked. I was very disappointed with the way it looked on me, but you may think differently after trying it on.

They are the same size, as is the 5740.

The case of the 5712/1A is also more rounded and is thicker at 8.52mm versus 8.37mm

Thanks all. No way to see the 3800 and try it on in person. They are just too rare. Dealer just sent me photos of it next to a Daytona and it does look small.

The problem with these watches is that you can't just go into an AD or boutique and try them on. Sure every 6.5" wrist isn't the same, and different people will think the same watch looks too small, too big or perfect on the same wrist.

I just saw in his profile that he has a 5726 already so unless they are pictures of a 3800, they may not be too helpful. I do think that the 2.5mm case size difference between a 3800 and a 5711 is significant. But I don't think many would notice the 0.22mm case thickness difference between the 5711 and 5712.

I own the 3800j and the 3712a. I would advice going with the 3800 for two tone and all gold. The 5712
And 5711 are better in steel and are larger. But wear well. Wrist is 6.75 inches:

The size difference between 3800 and 5711/12 is a lot more than 2.5mm, more like 5mm in fact. Da bearxj86 can take the measurement but 3800 is roughly 37.5mm including the wings whereas 5711 is around 42.5mm again including the wings. From 10 to 4 the 3800 is around 35mm and the 5711 is 40mm.

A former colleague of mine had a 3800/1A. He has tiny wrists, probably 6 inches flat, and the 3800 looked small on him. I have 6.6 inch wrists and 3800/1A looked tiny when I tried it on. And I am a guy who likes small watches. I love my 34mm 3998P Calatrava but even that one has a larger dial than the 3800. When it came to getting a basic Nautilus there was no way around the 5711 (or 3700) size for me.

My comment was a reply to Robine saying that the 5712 was much bigger than the 5711. Now I may have read that incorrectly, but I would agree that a smaller 3800 compared to a 5711/5712 (37.5mm case vs. 40mm case) would also mean it should be proportionally thinner.

I have small wrists and I just bought a 3800

I have small wrists and the daytona ( vintage ) looks good on my wrist.

I considered the 3700 but it is wildly expensive - more than twice the cost of a 3800 I think the 3800 is a a great watch .

If you are buying for resale then you need to consider size - although 37mm is not small .

I have a PP ref 5070 and also 5235 which are both > 40mm . They sit well on my wrist

I will post some wrist pics when it arrives

There are no shortcuts. If you want a Nautlius in a size which is considered as "contemporary", i.e. feels like a 42mm watch, diameter covers entire wrist, then looking at older models is not going to help.

They are cheaper but for a reason.

I’ve got one and really like it. Definitely on the smaller side but I don’t find it looks tiny (will post pic when I’m able to). I’d say I’ve got medium sized wrists (the 3800 probably the smallest watch I’ve got and largest is a 2998-4 speedmaster).

Thanks all. Really appreciate the feedback. Since I cannot see one in person, sounds like it does not make sense to take the risk for the 3800. Starting now to focus on the 5205 or 5960. Really beautiful watches. Also good to expand beyond the sport watches I have.
