Patek Phillipe 5015 - J

Hi, my Dad just gifted me this watch. I was wondering if anyone knows of any online manuals out there for things like adjusting the moon phase. Also the original strap is done for & I'd like to get something a bit beefier e.g. a black croc that doesn't taper and would keep the dress watch look but make it look a bit more prominent on my fairly large wrist (any suggestions?). Thanks!

Nice watch, but for someone with a special taste. I never came to terms with the crazy Alice in Wonderland dial.

Not sure whether a non-tapered strap will change the (perceived) dimensions of the watch. Try wearing it with a shirt with double cuffs, not with a t-shirt. This should look better.

I think the pusher for the moon phase will be the one below the crown (at least it is on my 5712 which has the same movement).

You can see how to set it here: https://www.patek.com/en/retail-serv...tings/settings

Basically you set it to full moon and then look at the above link to see how many days that has passed since the last full moon and click the moon phase pusher that exact number of times.

Thanks Robine - I have to say I'm an American living on the West coast and haven't worn a "French Cuff" shirt in 15 years (since my wedding). But you are right it is a crazy dial - sometimes, when I look at it, it takes a couple of seconds to figure out what is going on. It would not have been my 1st choice but as a gift from my father it's a keeper.

That helps. On this model the pusher is at 8 o'clock but I will try to set it as you've pointed out.

My Mech Watches

I've ended up with a weird collection. Rolex 14060, BR123 & PP 5015 I think I'm done now.

Here are my 3. 1. BR123 2. Rolex 14060 3. PP 5015. Sorry about any incongruous posts. The first two I bought new. The Rolex in 98 and the B&R in maybe 2010? The last gifted and crazy dial aside my favorite because it was a gift.

First of all, let's deals with the "too small" BS. On that pic, the 5015's dial looks larger than the Sub's dial (which has a wider bezel).

Then the elongated lugs also add to its (perceived) size.

Don't wear it directly after you took off your Sub. It is a wonderfully eccentric watch and you should wear it in the right context, with a proper jacket and shirt. If going "casual", which seems to be unavoidable in the U.S., a light blue oxford cloth shirt will help "popping" the 5015's gold. It will not look good with a band t-shirt or any kind of short-sleeved shirt.

I would also have the worn strap changed to, yes, a high-gloss black croc strap. It's like wearing a tie, or using both hands when eating, instead of cutting up your food and then eating with your right hand, like a toddler. A grown-up thing. Like drinking good coffee from a real cup and not from a paper cup with a plastic nozzle.

Get used to it, learn to appreciate it. Even within PP's line-up, this is a quite special one and a refreshing change when considering all these me-too 5711s. Unlike many other watches discussed on this forum, you will unlikely bump into someone wearing a similar watch.

Oh and if you do some research you will find that there is a Nautilus with the same dial layout.

Robine, Thank you. I could not have crafted a more perfect French response had I worked on it for weeks.

But when people use the term "vintage" about something that was made several decades after my birth...

you're right, I think this PP is about 25-30 years old but the style looks similar to some vintage watches, I think it looks very charming to me.

It is extremely charming. Just imagine you would have ended up with a 5711, and you had to tell all the other guys in the sports bar how much "profit" you would make when selling it.

This one is sports-bar-proof.

Oh, and look at PP's current range of YG cufflinks, then you will have some extra metal on the sleeve to counter-balance its smallness.

Wristshots, please.

congrats on a beautiful watch, your dad had a great taste getting a Patek with complications. I have ordered genuine patek straps from Geneva for my 3919J and the sent perfect strap. Patek ADs have specific catalouges for straps and they cater for all their references. you might pay a little more than ordering from an online strap shop but the experiance with the AD will be worth it
