I'm looking for advice and guidance from the UK
A work colleague does not know what to do with this watch, which was his father's and has sat in a drawer for many years. It was sent to Rolex for repair in 1993 and sent back as no parts available. Can anyone suggest a possible repair/service option in the UK? Is it worth trying RSC again after all these years?

That typewriter letter from Rolex is super-cool, regardless of what happens to the watch.

There are vintage specialists who can fix it. Steve Hale seems to be emerging as the UK version of the well-respected Los Angeles experts.

Shouldn't the dial have the words "Datejust" and "Swiss" on it? Perhaps the dial was refinished.

Either way, very surprised that way back in 1993 Rolex couldn't repair a watch from the '50s. Seems odd.

The dial appears to have been repainted at some point in time.

The first round of DJs didn’t have Datejust on the dial. They were solid gold and the known branding was Oyster Perpetual - so it had the pride of placement on the dial.

Later on it showed up. This watch seems to be ‘52 or ‘53 by some databases.

For the OP, he may need to do what I did with an old Omega from the early ‘60s. Buy a non-working donor movement. Or just the parts that are broken.

It’s cheaper than fab’g any broken parts. A non-Rolex mainspring may be needed or maybe even a few screws and mounting tabs.

A good vintage watchmaker should be able to source most of the parts but some may need a quest to find them.

This can take control over your life if you don’t go into it with the risk of spending more than the monetary value. But the emotional value is more rewarding methinks.
