Rolex Yachtmaster Platinum dial
I have read online that this version of Rolex has a few different iterations can somebody explain the differences. I also heard that it was one of the first models to have the maxi dial can anybody confirm that? Is there a certain reference number that has the maxi dial? Last question does anybody have any pictures or videos comparing this platinum to the newer Rhodium?
Any pictures or videos or links to see if side-by-side would be helpful I can’t tell how dark the rhodium is thank you |

The Yachtmaster 16628 came out in 1992 in 18k gold. The SS platinum maxi-dial and platinum bezel was a 1999 addition.
The rhodium dial Yachtmaster is painted.

Is there a reference number or some other way to delineate a maxi dial platinum yachtmaster vs a non-Maxi one?

I think there are some threads on TRF under the “references” or “technical specs” folders.
I have the platinum dial (bought new 2/01, made in 2000, pre-“Rolex” on the rehaut). My avatar is of that watch, but it’s a generic photo I grabbed from the internet and not of my actual watch. The dial is very “sparkly” in the sun, with an almost grainy texture; this, apparently, changed at some point, It’s not clear when, but it was during the initial run of the SS/platinum: maybe 2003? Mine is the ladies’ size, so I can’t comment on the maxi case dial, and I haven’t seen many others “in the wild.” I know my version didn’t score a lot of points style-wise at the time, because it was considered too monochromatic (the YM really took off with the Rose gold on Oysterflex), but the early dial (which I have) had texture and sparkle. I recently got a silver dial DJ (16200) from circa 2003, and its silver dial is totally different than my YM’s platinum dial. I went into a Rolex AD a few years ago and saw the YM with the darker grayish dial with the light blue second hand. The dial was much different than mine. I think our beloved JJ had one for a while (his “Platty”), so you may find some of his old posts with it. As I recall, Jocke posted some great close-ups of it. I seem to recall him replacing the date wheel with either a roulette Date wheel or an all red Date wheel, to match the second hand. I wish I could be more helpful but there are a number of YM posts here on TRF. Good luck! |

Read the threads already in the archives there are few, but consensus is that the earliest 16622’s have the most “sparkly” dial due to the larger grain size as stated above.
The difference between the early 16622 and the later 16622s is small. If the year is unknown I believe the width of the O in ROLEX can be a tell for its age. The elongated O being on the earlier ones. The 116622 also has a platinum dial configuration. Its grain size is smaller so the sparkle effect is even more subdued. BUT it has a redesigned case with IMO better looking SEL (solid end link) and an improved clasp (although you can mod a 16622 to have a newer clasp).

The Yacht-Master was the first model to introduce the maxi dial, then followed by the Submariner 16610LV.
A brief chronology on the pt dial and its replacement: 1999 - 2012: 16622 solid platinum dial (with a variation in the sandblasted finish from a larger to a thinner grain and a change of rehaut from empty to engraved) 2012 - 2016: 116622 solid platinum dial (blue parachrom hairspring, blue chromalight, oyster bracelet with solid links, oyster clasp, oyster lock, easylink) 2016 - 2019: 116622 rhodium painted brass dial 2019 - today: 126622 rhodium painted brass dial recently renamed slate dial (movement updated from 3135 to 3235) |

I’m still confused on this.
I’m looking for the updated platinum dial yachtmaster the one with the EasyLink clasp and the maxi dial. Is that reference number 16622 Or is it 116622? Furthermore am I looking for a year of production to ensure that it has those features that I’m looking for? |

Mine is a 2006 16622 and it has the sparkly platinum dial, platinum bezel and insert, complete solid bracelet (no hollow links), and the old style clasp. Maxi dial of course.

In the 116622, the rhodium dials appear to go for a slightly premium to Blue, and Blue a premium to platinum. I think the 116622 platinum dial will be collectable one day given the low production, and the platinum dial going out of production. |

Ok, send me $15k and then Ill mail you the exact watch that you’re describing in two weeks. Cant get any easier than that ! Jk, first off EVERY Yachtmaster reference has a “Maxi Dial” As for easy link, that means you’ll want the 116622, as others have mentioned. Its as simple as that !

You need to find a model 116622 not a 16622 and with a platinum dial, not a rhodium nor a slate dial. That is the watch you are looking for based on your posts
