Rolex sd4000 116600

I noticed the price on these rare sd4000 are beginning to take off- $18,000-20,000. I personally still think is cheap since it was made for only 3 years and is very rare for Rolex to make something for 3 years. Not to mention this watch is a true beauty. I can still remember one can be had for under 10k.

Agree - this is one of my favourites - unusual as no cyclops, helium escape valve and increased depth. Plus not seen much as unloved (at the time) and short production.
Have one of the early ones from 2014 - bought for my sons birth year.

Yeah, I mentioned on another thread that I think the watch is the best blend of all worlds, not just in terms of proportions and materials but in terms of still managing to look like a tool watch (and not jewelry) despite being a modern reference.

I struggle with whether to keep it sometimes because I do have a lot of black divers covering the various looks, so then I wonder do I need a 'best blend'. But if I were to go down to 1 black diver from Rolex, this would be prob bit it (12 series no date sub also a contender but the clasp size bothers me still)

It's rare for a modern Rolex but there are much better Rolex watches out there for less money. The Sub41 blows it out of the water. I never wear my SDc but keep it in the safe as it'll only go up in value.

It's realistically a 5 digit watch with a 6 digit ceramic bezel which pleases neither 5 or 6 digit fans.

Better proportions, not top heavy, better looking dial due to the new AR. I have both in the box and I think I've worn the SDc 3 times since buying. I don't care about keeping things in the safe - if I want to wear it I'll wear it but I get much more enjoyment from my Sub41, dblue, SDc etc. It's my least worn watch and I have a sub40 too

I would rather get a 2017 MK1 SD43, more advanced, new movement, better proportions, red text etc. Has a nice blend of the past with the best of current innovations. The MK1 was only made ONE year. A true 50th anniversary and an exceptional watch. I'm shocked pieces are still relatively reasonable.

Good points, I just wouldn't have said "blows it out of the water " no pun intended lol its still a great watch.

Also yes there are better Rolexes and divers in the lineup for less money. The flippers are trying to capitalize on this one but I don't think its working, it looks too similar to other subs.

Yeah I have both also and was curious to your reasoning. I would agree with your statements. The sub41 not quite perfect for me though. Then again nothing has been as I guess I’m in the camp that would want a 5 series ceramic sub, and it’s true the SD4k comes closest but is not there due to thickness, stubbier lugs and endlink fitment.

I almost bought one of these when they were still less. Decided on a late 16600 instead because I liked the dial better with the small markers. I can see though how these will become highly desired.

Didn't you just say its already hit 20k? Great watch, but again this is all market silliness and I feel an adjustment will bring it back to earth. There is nothing extraordinarily special on this piece besides a short run. Another way to look at it, like another post here said, you might as well buy a better watch in a new Sub41 or SD43 for much less especially when they become more available which they will.

I bought my first SD4K for $7K in 2016. Ended up missing it and ended up buying another in 2019 for $11K. I was a little bummed at the time but feel better now :-). For about a half-dozen reasons, it's my favorite Rolex diver but the one thing that bothers me is how top heavy it is.

I have a complete set, 2017. I love this watch, but have also played with the idea of letting it go + my '21 BB Chrono and picking up a VC Overseas silver dial which has been a grail piece for me. Same time though it's hard for me to justify walking around with a $22,000 watch on my wrist. First world problems.

Being a big SD/DSSD fan, the SD4K is the one that got away for me when prices were still reasonable. Still tempted every now and again when I see a near NOS pop up to pull the trigger.

Ah I'm glad you said this. I am feeling the same way. The value increase on my watches has been great to see on the one hand, but on the other I was way more comfortable wearing a 9K pepsi than a 23K pepsi.
