Which Aqua Terra? Here is my review and yes I would probably upgrade to a better movement and nicer looking watch

It is your decision to make, but it doesn't seem like a smart move from any angle, and also given that the Explorer1 is discontinued makes it more ridiculous.

I like Omegas a lot and some of the ATs are beautiful and well made. But they are also in the affordable side. Maybe you can save up for it since they are not going anywhere any time soon. The 36mm Explorers (old and new) are special though and classics in their own right. I still want one of those at some point. I’d keep it.

I woke up this morning, put my 114270 and it was pretty cloudy… the white gold 3,6,9 looked so gorgeous and I was like damn that watch is comfy and pretty. Yeah, what did I think to myself?
I do want an AT though, REALLY WANT ONE. I have a 16660 that I will never sell and the 114270 is the other most significant watch I have to finance that since I am going to spend a lot of money soon and can’t pocket an AT. The 114270 was my first Rolex 5 years ago, I sold it after 3 years of ownership but bought it back again a few months ago. |

Plenty of folks here will say keep the Explorer. Its not that compelling a watch and far from the version that went to Mt. Everest. People like to throw the word icon around with the explorer I, but its not the Sub/GMT which have had very small changes since their inception.
The Aqua Terra is the better movement and also more antimagnetic (for folks that want to try to disagree with me on this see Walt Odets epic take down of the Explorer) and more versatile watch as it has a date. Just because it has "rolex" on the dial does not make it better. If its investments others are after, get stocks they do better over the long haul. If you are looking for a great watch and are not thinking of investments, and like the design better, get the Aqua Terra. |

And I wouldn’t use the over used term ‘icon’ as that description is better suited to the DateJust or Sub in the Rolex line. But for a watch that is durable, reliable and discreet, it’s hard to beat. I’m an Omega fan and had the Aqua Terra on my radar for two years; it has some better technical features, the new movement is great (more advanced, very accurate, but that Rolex movement is a tried and true workhorse) better antimagnetic resistance (much more than most non-physicists need) and the design cues, dial and other aesthetics are clearly more desirable. However the reality of high end watches, and luxury goods in general is that specific technical attributes don’t always sell, it’s name recognition and perception that draws people to a brand.

Sure why not. Doesn't matter a whit if other people don't like the style of the numbers or think it's too thick or Omega < Rolex etc,
Only important thing is whether you like it and want to wear it. In the world outdside of these forums, no one is going to assail your character for wanting a non-Rolex. Sell the Explorer whilst people are out of their minds for all things Rolex, buy the AT gently used, spend the difference on another nice watch.

Better to be patient & save up and hang on to the Explorer if you really love AT.

NO CONTEST, imo. I have gone thru this, and say keep explorer. Get a preowned AT. AT is a good secondary watch to Explorer, different sizes and colors available.

These are really different watches to compare against. The 114270 Explorer is basically a 30 year old "vintage feel" watch. It's going to feel barely on the wrist compared to an AT. I've worn an AT8500 for 9 years and it is miles ahead on the detail and finishing compared to the Explorer but it's also heavier, thicker, has a solid bracelet, a date, display caseback, and longer power reserve.
It's just a busier watch in general so you have to decide which you prefer. Obviously, the prices on the 114270 are a bit obscene at the moment so the AT provides way more value if you're simply looking at buying cost vs. features. |

Personally, I like some ATs a helluva lot more than I like the Explorer. The Explorer is a great watch of course I just personally prefer the AT.
If it's a question of a watch to actually wear and enjoy I'd go with the AT. If I was worried about resale and "desirability" AKA hype and general hard -to-findness, then of course it's the Explorer. For a lot of people nothing could ever be better than a Rolex, so if that's you it's not even really a question. |
