More burgundy suggestions, please!

If you feel there is a west coast offering that is close, I would be up for check it out.

Thanks! Always appreciate your insight on here!

Think Bourgogne, village wines, you can find them from producers who also make premier and grand cru wines. look around. Best thing to do is to seek out Burgundy tastings and just try everything you can to get a feel for who makes your favorites stylistically. 2017 and 2018 happen to be GREAT vintages for burgs so no need to seek out older bottles affordable burgs don’t need age IMHO.

It drank well...but honestly I'd wait. My wife loves Caymus so we've consumed most of our older bottles I'm trying to hold off on drinking the special selection bottles we have. We need to load up on some more bottles to drink now and hold for later.

Difference between a Cabernet and a Red Blend is noticeable. The Silver Oak is more to my taste but the Wife likes blends. I'd say the Silver Oak after an hour of decanting is the winner here.

I’m facing the same predicament as you are with the older Caymus special selection. Stocking up and waiting a bit longer for the 2016 to mature. My wife only likes the special selection; I wonder why! Cheers

Wait, they are both Cabernet we are comparing right? I’ve had the Silver Oak but did not appreciate it as much as the Caymus. Maybe I did not let it breathe long enough. Will revisit the Silver Oak again. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

On a separate notes I’ve tried this Cyrus red blend, and really like it. Wonder if you had tasted it and your thoughts, if you have not, give it a try.

Sorry for the confusion the Caymus is not as strong as most single vinyard cabernet as I prefer. It is a blend different Cabernet grapes from eight separate appellations that create a more supple, rich wine with a lot of texture. I have an Alexander Valley Silver Oak collection 2009-2017 but she doesn't care for the wine as much as Caymus, unless we decant it for at least an hour.

I'll give Cyrus a try as we have not tried it. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for your explanation Larry. The Cyrus needs to be decanted also, at least an hour. The longer it decant, the more it opens up and finish velvety. Cheers!

Thanks! I've been more of a bordeaux and chateauneuf drinker but that Burgundy really piqued my interest. I guess the pallet really does change with age.

Your Palate does evolve and change, and then it goes back and forth then it takes a left and a diagonal u-turn and it all costs a lot of money LOL

I have tried many wines, I don't know why, but I cant drink red without having a massive headache that would kill a civvy (I was in the army for a long time and still use that phrase). I started off with Gewurtztraminer and Riesling, which, in the scheme of things are fairly sweet. I have since moved on to Chardonnay. Although French is easier for me to source, I just seem to enjoy Californian Chardonnay better.

I am a novice at this, but enjoy trying out different bottles of wine, what does anyone recommend?

Remember, Red gives me a massive headache so that is out. A caveat to that is that after spending so long in the Sgt's mess, I do forgive the massive headache I endure after drinking Port. I remember waking up one morning after a good mess function, on the floor, unable to move anything but my eyelids thinking, I'm dead. When I was able to move and think, I realised that it was the Port that I had drunk the previous evening. I couldn't find my red mess jacket for 6 weeks, I must have thrown it out of the window from my room and it found itself hung from the fire escape.

I'm the one on the right, the red mess jacket, came up great after going into the dry cleaners.

That's a shame Dave, I have friends in the same boat, the usual triggers in red wine are more often then not Histamines, Tannins or Sulfites. You could have sensitivity to one or all three, isolating it with your doctors help could help him/her to treat it but that can be expensive and a pain so I'd understand if you didn't bother, but do I love red wine!!

That said what are your favorite CA Whites? I saw you with some Ridge products, they make great wine! Have you had Mayacamas, also a good producer!

Hi Dave,

Fellow Brit (and Northerner) here to help!!

Our American cousins post loads of (undoubtedly incredible) wine that is almost impossible for us to source or is crazily expensive once here. (If anyone knows how to get them in UK please let me know)

Here’s my suggestions that have served me well without breaking the bank and are easily available at home.

I promise you won’t go wrong with these!!
Australian Riesling is COMPLETELY different to German Riesling and not sweet at all !!

Then we move on to probably one of my favourite white wines in the world!! An amazing winery just outside of Adelaide. Cannot believe it’s so cheap!! Please please buy a bottle of this. If you don’t like it, I’ll pay for the bottle I’m that confident !!

Finally, a tried and tested wine from France, readily available anywhere. Chablis!!

All the above are delicious and reasonably priced. You can of course spend obscene money but isn’t always necessary.

Please let me know how you get on

James.

That's brilliant James, thank you very, very much, I will certainly give them all a try my friend. Very much appreciated, thank you once again for your recommendations.

I must admit, I didnt know there was a Majestic wines close by but found one in Northallerton which isn't far from me, I had a look yesterday as I was passing. They were very friendly and, although I didnt buy anything this time, they took the trouble and time to talk and help.

Thank you very much Marc, I will certainly look at Mayacamas my friend. The Ridge was a present from my son. I quite like Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay and also some Francis Ford Coppola Russian River Chardonnay.

As James has said, it is quite difficult to get the Californian wines here without paying a lot.
