Wow, some mid-level bottles for a raffle, it's really getting bad.

I've got the Blood Oath 5, it's good, not great. MWND is phenomenal, every act that I've had would be worth snagging. I'm about 1 for 10 on Michter's 10, can't find one I actually enjoyed (just flavorless...). And Stagg has been getting better the last 3-4 releases, but still not worth more than MSRP. No raffles at my shop, luckily. I think I'm one of the top 5 customers for my guy, so I've got a good shot at getting anything he can get his hands on. The problem for my area is the distribution within the state, where 90% of anything good goes to the casinos and bars in Vegas, then Casinos and bars in Reno (my area).

Anyone have some suggestions about a special gift for someone who prefers blended Scotch.

I know a little about single malts and appreciated them in the past. But this fellow only likes Johnnie Walker. (Alright put away the flamethrowers all you super-single malt and Yamazaki lovers)

Now I know about JW Blue and that might be what I end up getting - but there are so many other labels in the JW lineup that I’m needing some help.

I can’t go into more detail than that - it’s all I have. So does anyone have suggestions about the other JW labels that may be better than the Blue?

I am trying to stay in the $500 neighborhood if it’s much better than Blue. Thanks in advance.

Chivas is decent.

Johnny Blue just released a 200 year anniversary bottle. That would be a cool gift.

Thanks but it has to be JW. And appreciate the lead on the 200 year anniversary bottle.

How about a bottle of JW Blue, and a pair of nice crystal tumblers?

Yes I think it’ll be JW Blue. I toyed with the idea of JW Platinum (ya know he carried the Platona home to US) but the Blue Label is the better blend me thinks. Maybe one of both?

I’m not good at picking crystal and never know who’s finicky - I might accidentally pick something that clashes with his wife’s taste.

Thanks for the ideas.

So… I have to admit I’d never have thought I’d say this, but my wife is now the better whiskey hunter in our house. She went to a neighborhood garage sale this past weekend and an older gentleman was selling these bottles. She is part Greek and “liked the look of the Greek bottles” and though, “hmm, Jon likes bourbon, and these old bottles are cool, maybe he can empty them and use them as decanters.” Seriously.

The gentleman obviously didn’t know what he had, nor did my wife know what she was buying. He told her his grandparents had them on display in their house back in the 50s and 60s but he didn’t drink much so he never thought too much about them. She acted like I would owe her back the $40 she paid for them all. Yes, $40…

The Old Fitzgerald is a 1953 bottling (tax strip intact) and the Old Grand Dad is a 1955 bottling (tax strip also intact). The IW Harper is a mid-50’s bottle, and the tax strip seems to have peeled off (not ripped). The two Beam 100 proof Greek bottles are circa 1957 and are full, but both tax strips have ripped. I’m not sure if they are leaded decanters, so I may get them tested. The far left decanter is empty.

What a find. When she told me how much she paid I almost fainted, then when I told her what people pay for these SHE almost fainted. I quickly paid her the $40 I owed her before she could figure out a way to sell them!

That’s a “find and a half” times a lot. She definitely is a good picker.

Do you plan to do an Alcohol Refractometer reading on the open bottles?

I honestly hadn’t thought about doing that, but it might be interesting to see how much alcohol has evaporated over the years. Might give a bit of an idea of quality, too.

The JW Blue is still more preferred IMO.

I’d recommend the JW green label. It’s 15y/o blend of of single malts.
This might be better than blue IMHO.

That’s a very cool pick! I’ve never been lucky enough to find an OKI, pre-New Riff or from the new guys. I don’t think they were/are distributed in my state. But that’s a great cause!

Just a few new bottles. 2002 Wild Turkey 8/101, 2012 Wild Turkey 12/101, and 2006 Wild Turkey 8/101 (1 Liter). I will have to open them up and compare flavor profiles.

The Glenfarclas 25 was a great auction pickup, one of the few Scotches I actually enjoy drinking.

Love the Glenfarclas 25! I bought a bottle for my 25th birthday 2 years ago. Finished it pretty quickly

Cheers, Bas! It's a phenomenal bottle. Not easy to find in my neck of the woods, so I had to go online. I have been trying more Scotch recently, and Glenfarclas, Oban, and Dalwhinnie are all very drinkable for my palate. The less smoke the better, for me.

Have a look at The Dalmore port wood and Arran port wood, they're incredibly soft and slightly sweet Scotches that I think are very approachable.

Have taken a bit of a break from peaty/smoky Scotch, it used to be all I drank but got a bit tired of it.
