Another Winder Questions

I’ve going through the search and didn’t find an answer to this, although it’s probably there somewhere.

On one of Wolf’s sales I got a heritage winder in a moment of weakness. It’s 900 TPD, but I didn’t realize that it’s double that if it’s bidirectional. And 1800 TPD seems pretty high. (I’ve seen a lot of the pros and cons of winders, but the biggest con (other than the we have natural winders in our arms) seems to be going too far over the 650 TPDs—something I didn’t realize in that moment of weakness.)

Can I set the winder to just clockwise (or counterclockwise) so at least the 900 TPD seems closer to the 650 TPD the watch requires, and will that work? And is there any issue/concern (damage wise, hard to see…) with doing it just one direction?

When Rolex states that the watch is bi-directional, it means that it will wind in either direction, not that you must wind it in both directions. Some watches will only wind while turning in one direction so for those unusual brands direction is important.

When a winder has a bi-direction setting, it rotates one way for a while, then reverses and turns the other way. Not all of them double the number of turns when on this setting, so be sure to read your winder booklets. At the speed that a winder turns it is unlikely that a watch would incur a "wear pattern" if only going one direction.

Your watch doesn't care how it rotates while on the winder.

If wear is a concern for you, you could set it for CW for a month or so, then set to CCW, and so on.

Thanks. That all makes sense and I’ll try that. It would be nice if Wolf didn’t just have bidirectional mode double the TPD. But I guess that’s a way to suggest you buy the more expensive programmable models. I would guess not many watches need 1800 TPD.

How many Rolex models require winding at all? They hack and they're easy to set.
