Alternative Investment Thread

What is everyone investing in that has been working out for them? Minus the usual real estate, stocks, etc.

I have dabbled in urban art the past year and started looking at collectibles like retro video games. Basketball, pokemon cards seemed hot the past year but I haven't had a chance to research into that space

Has anyone had luck in buying and selling NFT's? Does anyone buy physical gold, silver or platinum?

Had anything not worked out investment wise in the last 10 years? I have had gold and some collectibles, does not perform over the long haul like good old fashion S&P stocks.

I collect pokemon, silver, and gold but nothing beats S&P with dividends reinvested. The internet has actually reignited the collectibles market but many dealers haven't adapted to the internet age. I sell collectibles and antiques for a living so alot of the joy in collecting is lost on me. I do believe that early pokemon cards are currently under valued as the current collectors market really isn't solely focused on those cards. I have some high grade rares that I need to get graded but grading times are a ways off there. Ultimately its dealers who make the money in collectors markets though as sellers fees and wholesale vs retail pricing usually eats up the profit. Then worrying about damage over time. I pretty much collect cards with the belief that they're worthless. If they don't bring me enjoyment I don't buy them, what the future holds is anyone's guess, but they seem to be only getting more popular from other dealerfriends of mine who specialize in that. If you want to make money on silver or gold, buy paper holdings, but ultimately I don't see them outperforming over time. But for the short, I feel like you could probably do well going into 2022 with this bullish market.

As long as you invest continually, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you do get into cards, buy the rarest and best examples you can find, don't focus too much on specific card. There are plenty of rare cards that simply don't have a strong following. When more people start completing sets, those will be the cards to increase first

Can’t help you.

Large cap dividend growth stocks are what I’ve been in since 1987. I’ll stick to my knitting

Good points. It has been free money since the start of QE programs. Besides the fact that passive index products being so focused on, basically result in free financing to any companies within an index just by being included in that index. Even the worst stocks get positive treatment just by being included in the index, artificially inflating share prices. Makes debt financing cheaper ultimately.

speculator

I've been a speculator all my life (so ive been told) I bought and sold Vintage Avias to fund my first Rolex, I collected in a similar way by letting the collecting to pay for its self, Antiques, Militaria, Cool Junk, Antique jewellery, silver pocket watch chains, Gold & Silver coins, and a Gold bar recently, my only advice is to buy what you like and are really interested in..... you may find that your investment is worth less later on in life..... as it was with the guy who spent 44 years collecting 1977 QE2 jubilee coins. he had over 150 of them, and believed they would be worth a small fortune,.......couldn't give them away.

Made some good money with trading unique electric guitars, mostly Gibsons Les Pauls.

In 2019 I bought a Gibson Les Paul 'Appetite For Destruction' (2010 edition) signed and played by Slash (Guns 'N Roses). Sold it a few months ago, tripled my initial investment...

Not doing it anymore, too much effort.

Minting NFTs beats buying the drops others offer. You literally take nothing into the blockchain for an infinite ROR.

Unless you blow your hardware. Even non limited hash rate NVIDIA 3080s and 3090s will over-stress and cost you a lot of money after a while. Most miners try to dump them to unsuspecting gamers at end of useful life. My opinion at least and both CPU and GPU mining will be done within the next 2 years. It will be dominated by quantum computers. And will
Be heavily regulated.

Edit: I read minting as mining when I responded rofl Happy New Year

Treasury I bonds are paying over 7% on Treasury Direct. Personally, I prefer stocks, but they can crash.

And as that becomes more limited you will be in a better position for it. Truth is, bitcoin and nft’s are speculative so there’s big money to be made. But you can also lose your ass pretty quickly. For me it’s my business, the market, and dirt. Right now I like tangible items. That said, as things keep heating up in the land of make-believe, I’m open to jumping in.

are on the same page, as they say god isn't making land anymore. The land of make-believe is starting to convince me ever so slightly that the land of make-believe is going to be a thing.

most people don't know about these but I Savings Bonds.
The initial interest rate on new Series I savings bonds is 7.12 percent +adjusted every 6months for inflation. Only issue is that you can only purchase $10k-$15k worth.
