When do you decide to trade/sell?

Hi all. I want to slim my collection a little bit and consider getting rid of pieces I don't enjoy or wear as albeit great pieces, e.g. my Rolex Milgauss Blue Z and Oris "Carl Brashear" Bronze Chrono Diver. Out of curiosity, does anyone have criteria they use to make the final decision of when to sell or trade, that you're willing to share?

“When they no longer bring you joy” is the common answer.

So, not worth holding on to from
an investment perspective? My AD use to tell me that you should keep a watch for at least 10yrs then sell if want. This was part of the reason for me ask.

If you don’t enjoy it and don’t wear it and are not accumulating a collection, then I would think it might be a good time to trade it or sell it.

For many years, I usually sold or traded when I when I wanted something new. My small collection has now gotten to the point they are all keepers; I'm in trouble on the next purchase I suppose.

A friend of mine always said:
There's only 2 reasons you should sell a "Passion Asset"
1- You need the money to pay bills
2- You need the money to buy a better/more interesting Passion Asset

If you dont need the money, or you dont know what you'd replace the watch with, dont sell the watch

If there's something you'll enjoy more with the money.

I typically only sell/trade when I need funds for another watch purchase. If I am not wearing a watch and it is not special anymore for me it is gone. I do like to try a lot of different watches so it does not take much for me to move along.

I’ve been pondering OPs question myself - my thoughts are that it would be nice just to see the extra spare cash In my bank, although I actually have no use for it would just be cash in the bank.

Just like you said - once I’ve lost interest or don’t have any desire to wear it anymore.

When I realize the watch has doubled or tripled in value and I can trade into a higher horology brand

How much do you expect to get over the ten year holding period?

What other uses would you have for your investment capital over the same holding period?

If I’ve lost interest, or have sold on occasion to upgrade or take advantage of this crazy market. Doesn’t necessarily mean upgrading to another watch, some of my sales’ funds have turned into automobiles.

Rarely .Careful what you sell ,you may regret it .
Never do sideways moves .Must be real merit in a trade .

If I find that I have some redundancy in my collection and the opportunity to trade up to a different watch.

Yep that's pretty much my criteria #1

Criteria #2 is if I plan on trading up to a higher tier model. For ex trading a Sub for an SD, or a DJ for a DD

I'd rather look at a watch in a box that I didn’t need than some numbers on a screen that I didn't need. Unless you need those numbers on the screen of course

I think calculus might be a bit different if you already own the watch, as there are typically significant costs in selling (and potentially rebuying).

Not saying this is a good idea.

When I'm pretty confident I won't get seller's remorse. However, there's always a risk, you never know the full value of what you've got until you lose it. These days, making a mistake - selling and having to buy it back - can cost you 30% of market value if not more, i.e. dealer's spread. Problem is market values are historically high.
