Papers

Newbie to this stuff but recently became aware of an Explorer II 'McQueen' from a reputable dealer. The watch comes with box but no papers. My questions are:

1. What are the signifigance of the papers?
2. How much does not having the papers affect the value of the watch itself?

Thanks in advance.

The papers (warranty certificate) is only significant to help authenticate a Rolex unless the watch is fairly new and could still fall under the warranty period. There are also fake papers so you can not totally rely on them.

Also, some buyers will only buy pre-owned Rolex watches with papers because they want to buy the complete package (watch, warranty certificate, tags, brochures, boxes). I am one of those people. I want a pre-owned watch to look like I just bought it from the AD with all the niceties.

And then there are some people who only care about the watch since that is the only really important thing that matters.

I believe that most people would like to buy pre-owed Rolex watches with the warranty certificate so it would affect the value of the watch. My guess is that a watch without papers or boxes could affect the price of the watch by as much as $500 depending on the condition, price and age of the watch.

If I were going to invest that kind of money in a timepiece, I would want all the ducks in a row. No papers would reduce the price considerably. Very considerably.

i agree with richard... and now to avail the watch authenticity you have to have it serviced to RSC if you want the watch to be documented..but with this kind of watch you will put a lot of money to it...well i guess you can afford it...

Original papers are uncommon with this piece.

If they are present they increase the value by thousands.

Buy from a reputable seller who stands behind the watch and you should be fine.

Good luck!

I buy based on condition of the watch, if the watch has all the goodies that's a bonus for me. FWIW, papers can be faked and the boxes may not be the original ones that came with the watch, but just period correct.

I bought my DD (which is from 1984) in 2002 with no papers and a suspect box from a GD in Qatar.....he sold a lot of Rolex watches, the majority were TT DJ's which were engraved on the back with an oil company's logo and some script.....I knew more about the watch than he did, I checked the serial numbers etc etc, requested that the watch was serviced at the AD in Qatar and then paid up.....I do not plan to ever let the watch go so to me the papers are a bit irrelevant.......however even though I don't plan on ever getting rid of my other three I have the papers, boxes, hang tags, everything, in my safe......I couldn't just throw it all out of course....but just because my DD didn't come with anything doesn't stop it being a Rolex and doesn't stop me loving it......IMHO the other paraphernalia is only really important if you plan to sell the watch sometime in the future.......yes it's nice to have it all but at the end of the day the watch is what you wear and enjoy
