1952 Oyster Perpetual 6085

Picked up my first Rolex after many years of looking. The watch arrived today and I wore it for a few hours. Everything looks as it should. According to the dealer, who is a watch maker, it was serviced. Movements looked clean on the pics, but I have not had and independent verification.

Anyway, I have owned a vintage Tudor auto for the past 13 years or so. So I do have some experience with these types of watches. However, this Rolex is much older. I noticed today that it stopped running as I was sitting on the couch. Since I had not been wearing it long, I manually wound it about four turns. Later, it stopped on me again. I moved it around a bit and the second hand started back up.

Any thoughts? This isn't normal in my experience, but, like I said, this is older than my other watches. Had it just not had a chance to wind well enough yet? Have I don't something wrong while setting it? This is my first super crown watch. Seems pretty basic, but perhaps I'm missing something?

It definitely needs wound more than that. I have a 1952 6084 and I wind it at least 20 times.

I have a 1951 6075 - the date version. Great watch - good taste. Would love to see a photo.

You'll want to wind a lot more than four times :)

Understood. I didn't want to overwind it...looks like I was being overly cautious. :)

I gave it about 20 winds this morning...it didn't feel too resistant or anything. So I think that was good. It's my understanding that this watch has a rotor that winds in only a single direction. So perhaps I underestimated the affect that might have on the amount of wind that occurs with just a few hours of wear...especially while sitting on the couch.

Wind it more, 40-50 turns, what the heck. You can't "overwind" an automatic watch since it has a slipping clutch. If you have another automatic watch, you should have noticed that, unlike a manual winding watch, when you turn the crown, it never reaches the point where you can no longer turn it. (In fact, you really can't overwind any watch, but that's a different topic altogether.)

We would appreciate some photos.

Done, LOL! Yeah, I was treating this thing with very cautious hands.

This is really good to know. My previous experience was with a manual wind Tudor. So I've always been cautious. I had no idea about the slipping clutch!

Thanks, I try to have good taste. I have been dreaming of a Rolex for 20+ years...so finally got one. I wouldn't mind a flashy one that stands out a bit more, but I really wanted an understated one that wouldn't draw too much attention...except from watch folks. I wanted something with some dial patina, but recently serviced...original dial, unpolished case. A lot harder to find than one would think.

They're coming...apparently I don't have enough posts to insert a pic. Let me make a few more replies and I'll post a few pics.

Apparently I have lurked too much. I've been a member of the forum since 2011, but I only have 3 posts! So it is not allowing me to post photos.

Let me write a few more of these...pics coming. ...some that I have submitted are not yet visible. So I'm guessing they are reviewed by a mod until I hit my minimum.

You don't need to spam the Forum with a bunch of nothing posts.

Anybody can attach an image by using the attachment clip icon and meeting the size of the file to be uploaded.

10 sensible posts is to prevent spam urls, not images.

My apologies. The url/message to which I was routed after my post, re-routed me faster than I could read the message regarding mod review. So I was not fully aware of why my messages were not showing up. Still, I appreciate your point. I was mistakenly using the image icon, not the clip, so I suppose that was the problem. My fault...I guess my eyes aren't great...the clip doesn't actually look like a clip...I simply didn't see it. However, the pic icon does look like a pic. Bad UX + ID-10T error = annoyed mods. Thanks for the posting tip.

I would have loved a 6098 (36mm), but those are a little out of my price range. Luckily, I have a 6.25'' wrist, so the 34mm looks pretty good I think. It was too nice of a watch to pass up. Like I said, I've been lurking for a long time, looking at a lot of examples. This one really spoke to me, so I jumped on it.

Hello.
I am new to forums. I hope this is appropriate.
I need a recommendation for a replacement band. I have a 6085 that I just had restored and would like a quality band.
Thank you in advance.

I’m new to forums as well. The correct procedure is to start a new thread. Your watch takes a 19mm band if I’m not mistaken. Hirsch Straps, HODINKEE, and I actually got mine off of Etsy. You can fit a 20mm strap in most instances. Good luck! Can’t wait to see that watch.

There are a lot of different options out there. You need a 19mm band. Do a Google search for "19mm watch band" and you'll see quite a bit. If you're on Facebook, that single search will result in an endless stream of recommendations in you FB feed. I've never tried one, but these bands with a quick release look really interesting...would make it easy to change your band out, if you like changing up your look often. Other than that, I have no specific recommendations. I'm using the one that came with my watch.
