I think I see the one you mean, ref. no. 410.038. I've collected Lange for over 20 years and will share some thoughts.
(1) Price is good for no B&P. (2) There's always a pretty significant delta for Langes with vs. without B&P. This is especially true if you try to resell it to a preowned dealer. (3) For me, an incorrect Lange box is the same as no box at all, so be very careful when sourcing a box. Don't just buy any old Lange box. Why would I want a random (though authentic) Lange box that obviously didn't come with that watch? I say this because if you try to source a box from eBay etc., there's a good chance the box you'll get will be wrong unless you're really careful, and it'll also probably have a big empty space where the original papers would've gone (depending upon the box type -- Lange made many different box styles). That's one of the first things I notice when looking at preowned Langes with boxes, and it's a major pet peeve: "That's NOT the original box, so please don't claim it is in your listing -- and you definitely don't have the original papers, so even if you had the original box, the missing papers would leave a void both in the box and in my mind." (4) For me, an archive paper from Lange is unnecessary and redundant if you have a service receipt from Lange. They serve the same function, which is to say, "I'm an authentic Lange" (which is never an issue in any case because there's no such thing as a fake Lange that even remotely looks real). So if it's not the original paper, then I don't care. And of course, getting an archive paper from Lange also doesn't prove the watch wasn't stolen. (5) Always a chance it's stolen but hasn't (yet) been reported to Lange. That's your risk. (6) Have you seen a Dato Perp in person? I say that because I've always found the subdial font and the moonphase disc to be uncomfortably smalll. That's probably the most common piece of negative feedback about this watch. Personally, I'd go with two watches instead: a Datograph and/or a Langematik Perpetual. But if you anticipate having great near vision for at least the next decade or so, then go for it! Just checking to ensure you thought about all that. (7) I'd inspect the chamfers on the outside top of the lugs. This is the first thing I look at with any preowned Lange. Lange can make just about everything else about the case look factory-fresh when you get a case refurbished during servicing. However, if the lugs were previously overpolished, Lange can't really do a great job restoring those chamfers, so the top outer portion of the lugs will be rounded. A lot of people don't know to look for that, but it's better to know this now than to find it out later, when it's too late and you can't unsee or unknow it. One of the largest preowned dealers in the US is near me, and I've often visited there for people on the forums who ask me to inspect Langes in person. On many occasions I've told them, "It's hard to see in the photos, but there's little left of the original chamfers -- I'd pass on this one unless that doesn't bother you at all." (8) Bottom line is that the price for this particular piece seems really good. Just give those lugs a good look when you get it. And plan on adding a deployant buckle sometime (get the more common single-fold deployant, not the thinner butterfly deployant). Good luck with it! |
