In general I think DJs are more versatile, but between the choices the OP provided, I like the Santos better.

Rolex. Cartier in large is way, way too big.

But prefer the no date model even though it's smaller it wears larger.
My vote is specifically between these two dials.

DJ. I'm just not a fan of the Santos square aesthetic.

If you had to choose between the two

Depending upon how a DJ is configured, it can range anywhere from totally undesirable to one of the best watches ever.

If we’re specifically comparing these 2 watches as is, then nobody should be surprised that the Santos is getting some love here.

That being said, there is no way I’d ever choose a Santos over a DJ that has the right configuration for me.

Between these two, the Cartier Santos ! Especially if you own another ROLEX.

Santos in this scenario for me.

The DJ has so many varieties (and I already own one), but a DJ smooth bezel, on oyster just isn't for me.

I prefer the Santos. I like the design, look and the fact that they are some what unique.

Between these two exact watches I’ll side with Santos.

I prefer the Santos out of the two, never been a fan of Roman numerals on DJs.

Santos. Such a classic and an incredible value. But that's just me. Not a fan of smooth bezels on DJ or romans. PLUS, the Santos has one of the most amazing bracelet/strap systems out there.

As someone who owns both a DJ 41 and a Santos, I definitely think there is room for both in a collection and there are certainly pros and cons to both watches.

Santos
The Santos is a very unique looking watch. I always get compliments on it but at the same time it seems to fly a little under the radar (kind of have to know what it is). I love the easily removable links and quick change straps/bracelet…..makes the watch very versatile. My one issue with the Santos is the lack of a quick on-the-fly adjustment or half link. Obviously peoples wrists expand and contract based on a whole host of factors (temp, elevation, salt intake) and it often feels like I am a half link off in sizing. Taking a link out makes it a bit too tight and putting in an extra is a smidge too loose. Because I hate a watch that feels too loose, I often wear it without the extra link, but that means the watch can get a bit tight if I’m wearing it for a long period of time.

Datejust
My DJ 41 is easily the most comfortable watch I have ever worn. With the jubilee bracelet and “easy link” adjustment, I can wear this watch all day no problem. I know the DJ you are looking at has an oyster bracelet and I cannot comment on its comfort, but it still should have the easy link adjustment. Despite having probably the dressiest version of the DJ (fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet), I was pleasantly surprised by how versatile this watch is. The domed bezel with oyster bracelet is almost too sporty for a datejust for my taste. I personally would rather get a sport watch. However, I actually prefer to wear my DJ41 with jeans and sweatshirt over suit and tie (although it works fine there as well). I would say DJ is more recognizable by people just because if iconic look of the fluted bezel (this can be a good or bad thing depending on if you like attention as I think the DJ is a little flashier). As a comparison, when I get comments on the Santos, they tend to be from “watch people”, and when I get comments on the Rolex, they tend to be people who recognize general luxury good (Rolex, LV, Mercedes, etc).

If I had to choose one of my watches to keep and one to get rid of, it would be a touch decision, but I think I would keep the Rolex. The versatility of the watch along with the comfort factor would make it tough to get rid of. However, looking at the pics you posted, I dislike the variation of the DJ you picked (domed, oyster, romans is almost the opposite of mine) so I would probably go Santos. Hope this helps.

Being on a Rolex forum, we all know the result. However, I am going to be one of the exceptions and choose the Cartier. I have a Datejust, but I only conceive of it with a fluted bezel, jubilee and dial with baguette markers. That Datejust doesn't excite me.

Wow, this is much closer than I would have guessed. Nearly 60/40 at the point of this post. That is one thing I do appreciate about this forum - openness to other brands.

I had my Cartier first then Rolex. I'll do the opposite if I can go back in time.

Real life pic make the DJ really nice. However I think I’d take the Santos. I think a diff configuration would make the Rolex the winner.

Santos, no comparison for me at all. It’s an elegant, distinguished, classy watch. In my eyes, it exudes sartorial competence!
