I’m still waiting for a good samaritan to help me get a Daytona at MSRP. I’ve done lots of good deeds so waiting for karma to return the favor. Lol

I remember once Dr. Tom bought a white 116500 and sold it to a forum member for MSRP because he already had one. I miss that guy.

I have purchased Rolex for friends and let them pay me retail price.
I've done it with A Sub, Seadweller , Bluesy, James Cameron and a couple of Datejust 41s.
I have a good relationship with a couple of ADs and continuing to buy watches has probably boosted my profile and helped my mates get the watches that they wouldn't have been able to from an AD.
It's a win win

I think I've averaged about even. Lost my butt on a few watches and made a bit on some Rolexes. But my intention is always to keep them too.
MJ. I'd say that about the same for me over my watch journey .... those Tags sure were money pits

I doubt it. I am not in the busines of gifting money to family or friends unless circumstances, illness/job loss, etc. are in play. For the same reason many AD's will not sell hot watches to average customers. The AD is basically gifting a large amount of money should the person sell/flip. Those watches typically go to customers with large spend history and long term relationships. When you actually get down to the actual money involved I think it changes the discussion.

Good idea.

Nope I dont give away money to people who spend $ on something that is a luxury item. I have given cars and cash away to people who need it though.

I wouldn't.
I'd give a buddy a decent deal, better than they might find at a grey etc, but we're talking absurdly overpriced materialistic luxury items here...not insulin or cancer meds.
If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

Interesting replies here. I am entirely selfish though and prioritize me feeling good over everything else.

That being said, I taught my children years ago that although receiving a gift feels good, giving gifts with no expectation of anything in return feels so very much better. I guess my children are now just as selfish as me.

I have received the most highly sought after Rolex (Blue SkyD) from an AD via a friend and he did not ask me any single penny more than retail.

Some people are selfless and they value friendship more than materialistic benefits.

I was offered an OP pink dial and purchased it and sold it to a friend for his wife without adding anything to the price paid I paid at the AD.

To friends, yes. I’m about to do it for a buddy here shortly. Strangers, no. I also wouldn’t let a buddy buy a watch i didn’t want that wasn’t really a watch guy. At that point they likely will end up selling it and making money.

I’ve had friends do it for me, happy to return the favor when the time comes. Say AD1 calls with the watch i want, and 4 months later AD2 calls, I’m buying it. I have 5-6 buddies that are all watch nerds, someone will want it.

This is so weird. Unless it’s PM or a Daytona, we’re talking about 5-7k max. I would rather my friends enjoy a cool watch than have an extra 5-7k.

While I don’t know if any of my referrals have gotten the Rolex that they wanted, I’ve always put in a good word for people that reached out with my AD. I mean, what’s the harm? If anything, it might bring them one step closer to obtaining their first Rolex. Others wouldn’t even do that which boggles the mind. Let’s say I received a GMT and know that my friend or someone on the forum is looking for one, I would ask my AD to help them if possible (and I have for various folks on here and a car forum I frequent). Just being a nice human being doesn’t take that much effort. Put good into the world and get good out.
