Rolex - embrace the whole gamut and tolerance

I’ve been collecting watches for +30 years. Yes, the watch world went bonkers since 2019. Yes there are and have been huge amounts threads focusing upon: Pricing, Grey dealer woes, AD Conspiracy, Inflated Prices, Market up/down, Nicknames, The dreaded “investment” threads. I’m sure I overlooked many…

It’s a sign of the times guys. Love or loathe, It’s become part of the scene. We may be fortunate and it all blows over, or it may became a permanent fixture for the longer term. Either way, it’s a reality. What I think is that we need to accept that this is a new phenomenon and embrace the change, however tedious it may seem to some of us. Getting bitter or flaming this contemporary narrative just makes us all look like we’re bickering, intolerant and even parochial.

I think the “street reputation” of the brand differed the way the Rolex enthusiast feels about the brand. There lies the dichotomy of what the brand is all about. The history of the Rolex brand is epic and so interesting the more you dig deeper. Even the technical aspects of the movements over the years of change is fascinating and has turned me into a automatic movement super nerd.
No doubt the “ROLEX” as a brand is the master and seems to work on another level in protecting the brand for the long term that over time I stopped second guessing the brand and accepting they are the king for a reason.
Whatever the cost of entry to the Rolex brand, it’s at that point the Rolex ride really begins when learning about the legend on your wrist. My biggest fear is the new owner not discovering how deep the brand is beyond the generic “street reputation” of the brand. Lifetimes of ownership knowledge you won’t learn about in the books is shared in the WIS community that is almost like it’s own special guild or language that isn’t common in other hobbies.

I’m not convinced that this new brethren of watch aficionados won’t dig deeper after the initial novelty of their first Rolex purchase has settled in. I bought my first Rolex 30 years ago for similar reasons as those today’s new buyers are buying the brand. It had cachet, it said something about my tastes, it was expensive and it ticked the ego boxes. I think that depreciating these new buyers because of “why” they’re buying the brand is a mistake, a great number will become genuinely passionate about the hobby, all in due time.

The history of Rolex is so facilitating to so many people. is the way things are to be? Will they go back to "normal"? or is this the current chapter of Rolex's ingenious marketing. Either way we will embrace the coronet because of the love we have for the "game of it all" besides it keeps life interesting doesn't it?

Cheers Mates!

The thing is you mostly older folk are treating Rolex reputation like you think it was in the 80s, 90s and 2000s.

The truth of the fact is that Rolex has entered into the hype/hiphop and street culture. You got hardcore gansters, drug dealers and superstars all wearing them.

Hardcore street guys also rocking them as a status symbol and with that comes all the shonky stuff we've been seeing lately with robberies, money laundering and whatever comes along with it.

Rolex is no longer a brand for the affluent. It reaches and has tenticles into street culture, into urban culture and young guys are making up ALOT of the new clientele.

This is also affecting Patek and AP. Whether they like that or not.

Not sure early 50s is old, but I agree with everything else you’ve said

I was in my early twenties when I bought my first Rolex, so I can relate to what attracts today’s youth to the brand and why it has become such a phenomenal brand.

Thats exactly what I been telling people. My friend wanted to buy a Hulk but from AD, he was offered one at 14k brand new few years ago he didn't buy, he was waiting for his AD to offer it to him. When it got discontinued he was offered one at close to 20k and didn't buy because it was too much he said and he was looking for a deal at 15-16k. Now prices at 30k on grey and he regrets he didnt buy one at 20k. Look around, if you like a watch and you know you not getting one from AD for sure just make a decision, buy it and enjoy it.

You think Rolex just entered into "hiphop and street culture"?

Look up pictures of Tupac and Biggie, and see what watches they're wearing.

They died in 1996 and 1997, before a lot of people posting in the investment threads were born. And their style was built of a couple generations that came before them.

A bunch of us "older folk" probably got interested in Rolex watches because of their reach in the urban community, not because a bunch of country club investment bankers were wearing them.
