What a huge relief that there were cameras there!! Incredibly sorry to hear about this experience.

I agree with keeping your watch on if you don't want to lose it. This also applies to rings and other valuable jewelry. Sometimes there are circumstances where the watch, jewelry have to come off but usually best to leave it on. Glad you got the watch back, I hate thieves, would have taken the time to have him arrested.

You did well with the matter - not sure what I would have done, but if anyone oversteps with my wife, pets or watches it doesn't end well for them.

Thief is an idiot. There must be a million cameras in a federal building.
I would have thrown the book at him. |

Shit (like distraction) happens and happy to hear you got your watch back. It was your lucky day too if I may say so. The a$$thief was stupid enough to hang around. The thief was lucky you did not file charges (I would've) and maybe that's a good sign it wasn't meant for you to lose your beloved GMT.
I go into federal bldgs at least twice a month and once in a while the guards don't ask me to remove my watch or belt as I hate doing both. Cheers! |

You're right, what a total POS! Should have reported him, anyone who has it in them to do something like that deserves being dealt with by the law properly.
Very happy for you though, that you got it back, what a relief! |

Maybe, but if he even had to explain that to cops to prevent himself from being charged, it might scare him sober...unless he's a died-in-the-wool criminal. If the latter, he probably has a record, and wouldn't be able to talk himself out of a charge.

Not getting the guy arrested was the right move.
You have no idea what is going on in his financial world that when $5000 is just lying there he's going to turn it in. That said - creep move, not what i would have done - but way different than if he went out of his way to break into your locker, car, house, office, gym bag etc. Forget him, love your watch, move on dot org ;) |

Wow! I would have cleared my afternoon and gotten significant enjoyment out of seeing the guy arrested, what a di**! It's a great story, very cool that they got the guy on the security camera and were able to solve it so easily. Not a very smart thief!

The best part of the story is that these security guards actually took some time and common sense to help solve the problem.
In many cases most people would have been met with " Sir, Sir.... You have to calm down. Sir... There's nothing I can do." Maybe come by with a box of doughnuts or some token of appreciation for them they next time you go by.

I actually hugged 1 of the guards I was so happy and thankful. He didn't love it but laughed it off. They did a great job. I already notified the director of their actions and plan to bring them gift cards for lunch at a nearby spot.

If the video is still there why not go report him now to the Police. You have thought about it and change your mind.

Do you know if the thief is a federal employee? If he is, then his salary is paid by country's citizens, correct? (This is not right that he is remunerated off the backs of citizens paying taxes.) This is much more than a theft, in my book it is an ethical watershed. He could have called after you that you left your watch, he could have asked the guards to intervene, his wife probably knew and also should have been the voice of conscience to do the right thing. Seriously, this parasite needs to be turned into authorities and his superiors. To let him go is a discredit to hard working citizens who, through their taxes, are paying his salary IF he is a federal employee, who is getting government paid benefits, retirement benefits, etc. So wrong!!! I would pursue it, you got lucky he didn't leave the building asap, his next victim may not be so lucky.

^ this. So glad you got your watch back. Also thanks for posting your story I've gone through busy airport security lines many times with an expensive watch and I always wonder if I'm always uneasy about it being out of eyeshot. I might take one of the suggestions of someone on here and ask to be moved aside (so the line can move on) and scanned with the handheld wand from now on. The extra 3 minutes I'm detained is worth the peace of mind. |

Nice story! Most importantly you got the watch back! I despise thieves as I used to catch shoplifters at a major dept store when I was in college. I would have pressed charges AND you still can.....
