You have folks here that like to say that PM is better than SS and it’s simply false. The reality is that PM adds bling and brag factor but heft and makes the watch heavy and prone to flipping and flopping on the wrist when it’s actually worn as a sport watch as intended. I bike, play tennis, basketball, and what ever the day throws at me wearing my watch and so PM has no let me repeat no functional advantage over SS, it’s SS that has the functional advantage over PM.

PM is great for dress watches, but for sport watches completely unnecessary and for me moves them father away from their true DNA which are sport watches. The added bling and attention factor that PM adds is also not an advantage. Yes, PM often gives more dial options but that’s at a cost of heft and in the case of some PM excessive wrist presence.

You would be nuts to trade a batman and pepsi for a rose gold GMT. Not only has it always been pretty easy to get, relative to the batman and pepsi, but its at historical highs right now and will give up the most if the broader watch market softens.

People have forgotten quickly how just ~4 years ago you could pickup PM sports models for 30-40% off on the secondary market...

Anyway, when it comes to Rolex, its SS sports or bust.

PM and TT watches will be the easiest to source once the dust settles. Always aim high in terms of SS, IMHO.

Well, first I really only consider American style football and rugby as contact sports and the other is that I began wearing watches in the 80’s and used them as the tools they were intended and Rolex was the only watch that could go from being worn in the sports I mention to a sport jacket. I tend not to change my watch during the day and the watch I choose in the morning needs to take whatever comes. No watch does that better than Rolex.

The reality is, despite the modern wearers worries their watch as far more robust than they give it credit, and rolling the sleeves down when needed provides plenty of protection. I’m also aware that I got my Rolex in an era when yes, they were luxury watches but attainable but still meant to be worn. Not unlike a bmw. Luxury yes, but meant to be used everyday as intended.

This massive hype and folks in it for investment has obscured Rolex history, robustness, and relegated them to being precious jewelry and that’s a shame.

To each their own mate, but personally wearing a Rolex while playing basketball is a crazy idea. It can get rough even when no one intended it to be, and be fouled accidentally or not. Someone accidentally slaps your wrist to defend against your shot and now your Rolex is broken. I'd just wear a G shock for that.
