Does it make sense to add 124270 Explorer in my one watch (14060M) collection?

I've been added to the interest list several months ago and I seem to be going back and forth about it in my mind. Watched countless youtube videos to learn and appreciate its history and to see it worn on wrist, not to mention subscribing to threads on TRF Some days i'm 100% yes, on others i'm on the fence.

A photo of both on wrist

Any suggestions and opinions appreciated!

Have you tried it on yourself? I was shocked at how petite the bracelet feels even having SCLs. Uncertain from your post if you have.

It’s surprisingly versatile for a sport watch.
The smaller size and gloss dial give it a dressier feel than it’s larger 39mm MKII brother.
When I wore the MKII I’d often felt that I needed some thing a little more dressy for “going out/ special occasion” wear. The smaller 124270 has reduced that urge almost entirely.
My larger diver worn on rubber co exists nicely with the smaller explorer on bracelet to form a tight two watch collection that gives me variety of choice and two very different looks/ wrist feel .

FWIW my wrist is 7 inch so the watch presents and the small end of my personal range

That’s a yes from me

Edit- looking at your pictures ( which now show up ) I suspect a datejust might be a better second watch for you. That explorer looks pretty sporty in its sizing on your wrist

….Save the drama - I’m just here for the photos….

Some people like to have a single watch that’s a companion through decades, while others like to daily match their dial to their shirt. It just depends on your personality and whether you’re a collector, or just an enthusiast.

For me it's yes in theory, no in practice. Incidentally I've owned Subs and Explorers (yes plural) throughout the years but never both at the same time.

There are some users here that own both of these watches or some variation, and some in very small 2-3 watch collections and in pictures that combo looks awesome. That's why I said yes in theory.

But in practice, they are way too redundant imo. I just can't think of a situation where I'd wear a Sub and not wear an Explorer, or vice a versa. Especially if it's not the Sub Date.

Nice Sub!

I say if you can afford a second Rolex then why not get it. I really like the new Explorer 36. Looks good on your wrist if that is you in the pic.

On your wrists, I think you’ll find that the Exp wears a lot more comfortable than the Sub.

It is also more legible and has a sturdier-feeling bracelet, at the same time without feeling too substantial like the new Subs.

Totally agree. And I'm crazy but I like going to sleep with my explorer 😄

I recently sold my 39mm Explorer. It was a beautiful watch, simple, clean, and quite accurate. In the end, it just didn’t have enough to keep me interested.

If you’re going to get one, make sure it is going to suit what you want in a watch (low key, under the radar Vs. striking, interesting, or bold). I suppose that question would hold for any watch you buy, but in this climate of hard to get inventory from the AD, it’s easy to get caught up in the fear of missing out.

If you get it, I have a hunch your 14060M‘s bracelet will feel cheap in comparison
after a while! (Nothing wrong with it, of course, but the new bracelets are a cut above the 5-digit ones).

To resolve that and give your collection some variety, you could put an Everest or a RubberB strap on your 14060M and have two very different styles to choose from.

Here’s a gallery of a 14060M on a RubberB strap: https://chronotimepieces.com/shop/mo...trap-serviced/

A NATO on your 14060M is another fun way to give your two-watch collection some variety.

Both watches are gorgeous; but if you add an Explorer I, the beauty of your one watch collection will be lost.

You got a nice five digit with some time invested in it. Don’t do it.

It depends on what you want out of your collection and wear. I like the saying, "Two is one and one is none." I owned a TT Daytona years ago and had a service issue with it and off it went for repair. I missed it and after 5-6 weeks I bought a Submariner and when the Daytona returned after 16 weeks or so it was nice to have it back but now I had a two watch collection. If the watch works for you, I think it will, and you can make the purchase then I would do it. Have a two watch rotation and enjoy yourself. This is a all about the watches and as a hobby, don't overthink it. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Sub looks so much better on your wrist imo. My 16710 and my 14060M are the two watches in my collection that I will never ever sell.
And yes, I prefer the non sel bracelet, very comfortable when i compare it to my 16610 with sel.

I also have a 2 liner 14060M. For me the Explorer would be too similar. I would add a GMT Master 16700 or GMT Master II 16710. That is, unless you want to add a dress watch…

I originally thought that too, and yes…the new bracelets are definitely more solid feeling. After the initial honeymoon period with my GMTII, it is now my least worn piece precisely because it’s so hefty. The older watches are like wearing silk.

Generally speaking, I'd say that adding an Exp to a Sub for a two-watch collection is redundant, so I wouldn't recommend it. Both cover much of the same territory, with their classic black dials, hand sets, and similar hour markers. Either does best as a one watch...seems a bit crowded to have both.

The one exception would be if you are deeply enamored with basic dial of both and don't have any desire for dial variety. Then I could see the Sub serving as your hardcore activity watch, and then your Exp serving as your more casual-dressy watch. Best wishes

Hmm I'll politely disagree on this one. I think they are quite different. Dial indices and aesthetic are quite different. Similar in color, but still quite different. Also the bezel of the sub makes the overall watch feel very different to the explorer.

While they're quite different, we all honestly know they almost look alike except to most on the forum that knows they're different watches.
I support not having both in a single collection.
