I’m no Einstein, but I’m the kind of guy who’d probably be happy having seven versions of the same outfit to wear every day of the week, so being a single watch guy makes sense, in my case.

Only issue is my ocd kicks in and I have to make sure all the watches are showing correct time in the winder. So that can be a very unproductive time.

That is a very bad trait.

Just wear the damn Watches every day. They are made for it, what’s the worst that can happen, they get wear marks. Keep acting like they are made of egg shells.

Don’t get me started … I have about 35 tee shirts, but I usually wear just one or two. Oh, and I just bought another one today

I echo this entirely

This is my new playbook after ~15 years of being into horology.

3 is most efficient (sub, gmt, dress)
4 is most ideal (sub, gmt, dress, chrono)
5 is max (sub, gmt, dress, chrono, wildcard)

These work best for my lifestyle/work. The models could change but I think the numbers could apply to anyone. Anything less than 3 can sometimes feel a bit monotonous/cramped whereas more than 5 can start to feel overwhelming. Just my 2c!

It's different in some ways for long time owners of watches..We bought them long ago, held for many years and are a combination delighted they have increased so much in value and disgusted at the situation many of us are in.

It's such an individual decision. My family never knows what to buy me for gifts as I don't like clutter and am particular in my processions.

My collection mostly was in hiding when i lived in a private home. Now that I am in a condo with security, no chance of being followed when I am driving, I am that much more comfortable and secure in having the collection in a display box in a nice new walk in closet. I never even had the collection insured until the last two years. Feels good to have them appraised and in the event of a loss, I am totally covered including the increase on most of the collection. That is a deciding factor too.

It's changed everything. In all the years of ownership I rarely had them out and easily accessible. Now every time I go into the closet and see the collection I just absolutely love it.

To be clear, to be able to buy Rolex from an AD and know basically you won't ever really lose money, was part of the rational that got me started back in the day. Or that's what I told my wife at the time!

Original poster here.

I was away for a couple days and was astonished to see how many responses my thread has gotten. Just want to thank those who gave meaningful responses, I read just about every single post and came across some great advice.

I thought about this more after posting the thread and my decision will be to just wear my favorite watch in my collection and treat it as a "one watch collection" for the foreseeable future. I'll also likely add a quartz watch back to the collection at some point as a beater and use the automatic watch on my days off.

As for the other 4 watches I have, I'll let them sit for an extended period but will occasionally wind them every month or so. Then maybe who knows, down the road, Ill rotate again and make a different watch as my "one watch." I just don't know when that might happen though.

I learned that watch collecting comes in many cycles. At times you want to just keep adding and wear multiple watches and other times, you want to consolidate and just wear one watch. It just depends on the mood and right now my mood has been just wearing one watch. I'll not sell any in the collection as they all each have a different story of how I got them and I'm attached to all of them.

Whether or not I'll service all of them is up in the air as I'm still undecided on that. I guess it'll depend on which phase I'm at in terms of watch collecting and how I rotate my pieces.

Tyler Durden — “…the things you own end up owning you.”

Watches are awesome but anything can become an obsession. If that happens, pare down and move on.

On the flip side hunger can own you too. It's all about balance.

I have eight watches but really only rotate between three (Explorer 214270 MKII, 1861 Speedmaster, and BB58 Blue). Sometimes I get the urge to unload all but the Explorer so I’ll wear only that for a few weeks. Then when I put the Speedy or BB on, I remember why I’ll never sell. Variety is great and it hurts nothing to keep what you have. If you fall on really hard times and need the cash, then sell. But don’t sell something just because you think you “should.”

So unlike many of you here who wear your watches everyday, I unfortunately don't get to wear my watches the same way.

I have a job that's pretty labor intensive where I constantly work both outdoors and indoors and I just don't see much sense in wearing my Rolexes for work. So as a result, I only wear them on my days off, which is 1 to 2 days a week.

I've been in this hobby roughly 20 years and when I was new to it, I obsessed about getting multiple watches and happily wore all my watches in rotation for many years. But when I got the job I'm working now, I eventually wore my watches much less than I did before.

Unfortunately, I'm starting to believe that my lifestyle doesn't really suit owning multiple automatic watches anymore, especially if they're going to require constant setting from stopping all the time. I currently have 5 automatic watches and at times its a hassle to look after all of them especially since I only wear one watch once or twice a week.

So I thought about picking my favorite in my collection and just treating it as a one watch collection and letting the other four sit inside their boxes collecting dust, and who knows when I would wear them again.

My question is, would this be the best way to handle this? I could continue to rotate all watches but only wearing a watch once or twice a week and ultimately having to service all 5, is that even logical or practical anymore? Servicing all my watches when I hardly wear them all as it is?

Any advice would be appreciated.
You have 5 watches? that’s easy ( look at my signature , and three more).

Get rid of your non Rolex, you will be fine.

Collecting vs wearing might not always be same concept. Nothing will happen if they sit longer than usual.

Every so often I taken them out of safe and wind, clean etc etc . Nice to look at a collection.

I have too many watches, but around 7 of which I would classify as my treasured pieces. I don’t want to acquire any more in number at this stage and going to attempt a one in one out going forward. That said, I appreciate how fortunate I am that when I rotate a watch it is like owning a new piece every time.

It's an iconic piece and almost too much so; so far so good however! I'd wanted it for a while since the first time I got to try on a 12 series one. Such an improvement over the 11s, imho!!

Of course it's a burden.

But then again, most of what to we attach ourselves, be it material or otherwise, is a burden.

I remember a quote from Steve Jobs, after he'd been fired from Apple, saying he'd never felt so free, and with that freedom began the greatest creative period of his life, which is saying something.

Sometimes, less is more. And sometimes, more is more. You just gotta know what's right for your soul. My two cents.
