“Eventually” you may find it’s a stolen watch or worse, a great copy. RSC is the great Authenticator, but only if you have provisions built in to the purchase agreement.

Which is why I always tell prospective sellers that I plan to send the watch to RSC and what recourse I’d have if it’s found to be stolen/fake/Franken. If they get shady or evasive, I move on. Buying from a big name trusted source that lives and dies by its reputation is a smart move.

You can eliminate risk, but you can minimize. Or just wait and buy new from an AD.

Unless you can get papers for the papers, they're just papers.

And you can't wear the papers.

I'm buying it to wear so I don't mind it having some marks, but are the papers worth an extra $1k, or about 13% more?

I appreciate your input on this. If it was a more expensive Rolex, I'd likely opt for the complete set, but in the $7-8K range, an extra $1k is a more considerable difference.

Thanks!

Many people say the papers are worth 1/3 the value of the watch.

Does anyone check the serial number on their papers against the watch they came with?

All my watches were purchased pre owned with papers but i've never bothered to check the serial number on the warranty card actually matches the serial number on my watches

Papers dont worry me
Its money in/money out
What you save when you buy you'll loose when you sell
If you dont plan to sell, then its no loss

All this box and papers BS is stemming from people with an eye on possible resale in the future
If you're really concerned about authenticity, get it serviced and call it a day

Whether rightly or wrongly so, a lot of prospective buyers use papers to signal authenticity.

I'd get papers if it's a modern watch. If a vintage, wouldn't worry about it.

Here’s my question. Is the “more valuable papers watch” already have the value baked in when you buy it? So is paying a $1000 premium for papers just mean when you resell you’ll just get that same $1000 premium you just paid? If you buy the watch without papers for $1000 less when you sell it will it still just be $1000 less than one with papers?

Correct—that’s what I (and others) were saying earlier. So it’s all kinda moot as a value proposition.

Correct
Its (usually) a money in/money out equation
However, if/when you go to sell, the pool of buyers will be much smaller than a complete set would be

I check that all the numbers match. If I'm paying for a full set everything should be correct. For a watch within warranty it's the first thing I do when I receive the watch.

Easier to sell with papers, so factor that in.

I think that for a modern watch, it’s a necessity, who’s not keeping those in this day and age.

For a vintage, it’s not necessary but they do have value, if that makes sense. A watch from the 50s or 60s with associated papers and a receipts would be a lot more valuable to me, even if they aren’t necessary.
It would have been cool to have the original receipt to my grandfather’s watch
