42mm Planet Ocean Questions

Gents,

I was at my local Omega boutique today and they had a very old 42mm Planet Ocean in the display case. The one with the orange Arabic numerals. The SA feigned that he wasn't sure if it was an old model, but I told him it definitely was.

Can anyone tell me when this model was discontinued? Also, the MSRP is $6,200. What would be a fair price on a very out of date model that's been sitting in their display case for several years?

I quite like the watch but I'm disinclined to pay full retail on it. This is the exact watch from Omega's website:

https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/w...23230422101003

Thanks,

MJ

It was discontinued around 2017 or 2018 when the latest generation PO was introduced. For fair price, C24 has a fairly wide range of just over $4200 in Japan to over MSRP for BNIB. The OB probably won't discount but you might be able to ask for free straps and deployant clasp. I believe there were 2 OEM rubber straps for that generation PO: black and orange.

Thanks for the info Robert! I can't believe it's been in their display case that long. I had the newer ceramic Planet Ocean, but the 44.5mm case was just a bit too big and heavy for me. 42mm (for me) seems like a more wearable size. I also quite like the matte dial with the vintage looking bezel. If anyone has this exact watch, please post some pics and comments.

Probably my favorite PO reference. Had one, wasn't a fan of the bracelet...much preferred the rubber strap and deployant. I think my favorite little feature was the numerals, and the way they looked like anodized orange, rather than painted.

At this point, $4k for these would be what I'd expect. At a boutique, though...no telling. Maybe 20% off?

Thanks for the feedback Dustin. I really like the orange Arabic numerals as well. I think I'll ask exactly that; 20% off. If they bite, I'll have a nice new (old stock) watch!

Surely they would be motivated to move a 5 year old watch.

Thank you! I agree. The modern PO's (to me) fall into the trap of having two sizes; one too small and one too large.

i have had that reference. i flipped it because it was too heavy and there was about 1 mm additional steel from the case to the bezel. it was really thick.

but i bought for real cheap in 2012. no problems with the movement and looked really good

Update: I'm going to make an offer this week for 20% off of MSRP. If they don't bite, there's a NOS one on Chrono24 for 5k. Essentially 20% of MSRP. The only difference is it has the silver Arabic numerals, where as the one I want has the orange ones.

I'll post pics next week - or it didn't happen!

Bought the same model (orange bezel) 1 1/2 years ago brand new NOS that was in the display case for many years. I got a 25% percent discount and I think 20% off should be the minimum in your case.

Oh man, I really like the orange bezel version. That's a lot of watch for the money. And for some reason the MSRP shows to be $5,800 on the orange bezel version versus $6,200 on the one I'm looking at.

Either way, I will push for 25% now! Post a few pics if you can. Thanks!

To be fair, I bought two Omegas from the same AD the year before. So the 25% was a little bit of appreciation for the money I spent previously.

Also, I think the bezel in your model is ceramic and mine has an aluminum bezel.

It's a beautiful model and wish you good luck!

Ahhh gotcha. Ironically, I bought two Omegas from them in the last year. I bought a Speedy Pro (hesalite) four months ago and a Deville Tresor four months before that.

I still love Rolex, but I'm sick to death of the games and waiting. I can leave the Rolex boutique after looking at empty display cases, walk to the Omega boutique and try on and buy whatever I want....at a discount.

When I bought my Speedy Pro, a guy bought one just as I was getting there. I lamented that it was the watch I wanted to purchase. The sales associate was like "oh no worries....I have two more in the back." That was refreshing.

This is my PO, purchased new in 2010 as it was being discontinued. 42mm, the 2500D movement has been very reliable, looks great after years of daily wear, still keeps time within specs. Very simple, understated (as much as a Planet Ocean can be) the only orange is the tip of the seconds hand. These older PO models are great watches.

Well, I have a new Planet Ocean! 20% off and no tax. I’m very happy with the deal and the watch looks amazing. I won’t have it until Monday sadly because they shipped it to me (out of state).

Here’s a pic at the boutique. More pics to follow!

Beauty! Love the orange accents. Dare I say I prefer it over the Sub?

Is this the 42? Looks smaller than the Sub but it might just be the angle.

Thanks Mike! The wait to get the watch in hand is killing me. I purchased it at 11 am yesterday, so if they got it packaged and shipped pretty quickly, then I'll have it today. If not, it won't be until Monday or Tuesday.

The Seamaster is 42, but I saw a YouTuber measure it at 41.6 (basically 42). It does appear smaller than the 40mm Sub. Possibly because the Sub is pretty boxy and the Seamaster has a shorter lug-to-lug and the lugs twist.

I'll have to wait until I've had it a few months to say, but initial thoughts are I think I like it a good bit more than the Sub. But I also know the honeymoon period is not a good time to judge a watch. I had the 43.5mm Seamaster but it was just a bit too large. This one feels dang near perfect on the wrist. I'll post more pics when I receive it.

Here’s my old 43.5mm Planet Ocean. I loved it, but a tad too big. Ironically a guy on my team wears the blue version and he’s quite a bit smaller than me, yet it looks great oh him.

I agree - the PO looks better than the Sub side by side.

I agree...The 42mm Planet Ocean actually looks smaller than the 40mm Sub. I know there's way more to it than just the nominal size. Lug-to-lug and thickness makes a difference too. A couple of months on and the Planet Ocean is dominating the wrist time!

This is the one I have. Love it and the orange accented numbers are the perfect touch. Not a huge fan of the newer models with the partial or full orange bezel, but this one has the perfect amount of orange for me

I have that exact reference. At time of purchase, I prefered the orange numerals over the silver Arabic numerals since at some angles, the silver numerals seemed to disappear.

Don't be too surprised. A lot of these types of pieces will typically get sold out the backdoor if they are discontinued and aren't purchased by a customer in a reasonable amount of time. I remember when ADs still had five digit Explorer IIs sitting in the case for a year or so after the six digit Explorer II was released.

I purchased a Breitling Chrono-Matic which was discontinued in 2008 two years ago. It was collecting dust in a safe. The AD sent it back to Breitling who checked it out, issued an updated warranty card and box, before selling it to me at a huge discount from its MSRP. I wouldn't pay full retail for the PO you are looking at.
