Rolex Meteorite Dial Watches vs Omega Meteorite Dial Watches

Hi

I am curious to understand if it is just a Rolex thing or if it is because of the material (the meteorite) that a meteorite dial Rolex Daytona or GMT is so hard to get?

From what I've read and researched, the Omega Speedmaster also has a meteorite dial from the same meteorite but is still accessible at an AD I visited.

Is the Omega one not as rare as the Rolex? What is the difference?

Simple! Some Rolexes, Patek Philippes and Audemars Piguets are sought after and demand is greater than supply, while others brand not.

They're both from the Gibeon meteorite that fell in Namibia long ago. Watches with meteorite dials are becoming more popular of late, including some made from other kinds of meteorites, all of which the article linked below expands on.

https://robbreport.com/style/watch-c...ga-1234613358/

The Gibeon individual meteorites used to be more available, but Namibia cut off letting them leave the country not very long ago, and since then prices for even small pieces have shot up in price on eBay.

I believe there's an art to cutting and finishing slices into dials which includes acid etching to bring out the Widmanstätten pattern, and there there are imperfections found as the meteorite is sliced which means not all of it is usable.

Omega seems to have found a way to darken the dials that looks pretty nice, but that is processing, not a rare example of the same meteorite. I think Rolex does an amazing finish on their meteorite dials. I have one myself, and I still find it mesmerizing years later.

The Gibeon is becoming more scarce and pricier accordingly, but there's still lots of it in the world, and companies like Rolex have likely socked a lot of it away and would have little trouble acquiring more. They don't make so many meteorite dials that they're common, the demand is high, they're often reserved for watches with precious metals or complications, and all that factors in as well. There's nothing else like them, and they're truly out of this world.

I intensely dislike omega watches and their version of a meteorite dial is just plain ugly. I find their designs UGLY to my eye. I dont see any beauty in ANY of their watches.
Thats just my 2 cents.

Microbrands also make watches with meteorite dials for under $1k. It's not the price of materials that's responsible for the pricier Rolex vs Omega meteorite, imo.

Here's my Zelos Skyraider meteorite dial:

For me this is the nicest meteorite watch out there and in general Omega do it better, that being said if they were giving away a meteorite dial daytona I wouldn’t decline!

However the GMT is a bit all over the place for me personally

Wow, that is gorgeous timepiece.

Do you have to send them the meteorite dial to build or they can supply for you too?

How much does it cost for meteorite dial? I see they have regular Pepsi dial on their website.

I love their Seiko Daytona on oyster flex too.

Thanks for the info.

Why do they put "SEIKO" on the dial, not their own brand name?

I'd venture a guess that because it's basically a Seiko with a different dial and bezel? Although a great looking watch I'd be burning to get the real one and this would eventually go unworn.

My hot take: The busy-ness of a chrono dial detracts from the meteorite textures/features.

I like and own an Omega Speedmaster FOIS, but I am not a fan of the Omega Meteorite. I like the custom Seiko. They did a good job.

Not a hot take at all.

I'm a big fan of Omega watches in general but you nailed it, a meteorite dial should be plain to show off the dial.

While I appreciate the natural beauty of the meteorite material, and the Widmanstatten pattern, I just can't warm to it on a watch dial. And that's ANY watch dial. It always looks too distracting and jewellery-like for me.

We can agree to disagree on this. I traded several never-worn-anymore pieces for a meteorite GMT just before Christmas. I could not be happier! I think it's stunning. To me it's subtle enough to not be distracting at all . . . but when you peer at it it's just stunning. I think it's one of the very best pieces Rolex produce. I'm THAT happy with it.
