Capetown or DeMesy?

I am about to finalize a purchase. What do you suggest?

Should l proceed with Capetown Diamond out of Georgia. Which is a family owned business with mixed reviews or should I go with DeMesy which is more like a "Powerhouse"

What I don't like is that DeMesy does not have so much detail info as Capetown does on their site. They have just basic information about the model, etc and a small picture of the watch.

In regards to Capetown on the other hand I have found both good and bad responses about them on the forums. However their product presentations seems pretty good without trying to hide anything and even having pictures of the actual box, papers, etc.

Also the people that suggest Capetown seem to have numerous posts and nothing to gain by the reference.

Capetown is great to work with!

I've purchased 5 Rolexes from Capetown, and dealt with Jonathan Marcus and Ivan Heller. Jonathan is the owner's son, and very nice to work with, as well as Ivan. Very accomodating company, very fast delivery, and the watch, regardless of it's age, will look like a new one. I recommend them highly.

I also have to note here that Capetown seems to have great customer service (at least pre-sales) since they reply promptly.

Do both companys have the exact same watch at the exact same price and you're therefore hesitating whome to buy from?

Yes price is almost identical. Shipping costs are almost the same.

Capetown also have ensured me that the watch is just like new.

Capetown also seems to have lifetime warranty. There are some terms in regards to lifetime warranty. Here is the link http://capetowndiamond.com/flash/war_cert.html

Capetown purchase experience

One footnote regarding dealing with them, they will come off a little on the price. Not much, but a little, and the last 2 watches I purchased within the past 2 months were delivered free. Good luck in your purchase, and you'll have a good time opening the package when it gets to your home. They really package the watch up nice and snug, and cutting through all the packing bubble wrap is fun.

Would lean toward Capetown...

I live here in Atlanta and have stopped by and visited Capetown. Though the presentation left a little to be desired, at least they offer to let you see items in person and meet with them while Demesy's does not.

Also, Capetown does offer a LIFETIME warranty vs. 1 year from Demesy. That counts for something as well since issues do occur and having that extra measure of protection is always nice.

So, for those reasons, I'd go with Capetown.

Let us know what you decide and how it turns out!

I close to finalizing this with Capetown. I have asked for an actual date of production of the watch and if possible the first few serials.

Once they are able to provide me with these, and they are as expected. It is a go :)

I didnt know Carl Marcus was still around. I was buying watches from him back in the late 80's. I stopped dealing with him a couple years ago when he held $7500 of my money (wire transfer) for 6 weeks before shipping my watch.

He insisted that he have the money, and that the watch was "in his hand" and then after the money was sent, he informed me that his son had sold the watch locally. (There was a 2 hour difference in time between when he said he had it "in his hand" and the time the money was in his account.)

He then refused to issue a refund and waited until he could source another watch.
He outsources some of his repair and service work to the watchmaker that I use in Orange County, CA. and I have always had good experience with the watchmaker.

My issue was at the exact same time as this...

Greg Halperin wrote: "Has anyone had any experience with online vendor www.capetownstore.com? A close friend of mine orders many watches from them and I have always been skeptical of online watch transactions from presumably unauthorized dealers. Are my fears unfounded??"

I think you mean Capetown Diamond in Roswell, Georgia.

I am suing Capetown Diamond because on August 30, 2006, I paid them $21,112. for a Rolex 116509 Daytona and they shipped me...nothing. I filed the lawsuit a few weeks ago and they were served on February 2, 2007. They have until March 2nd to respond in San Diego Superior Court, or they will be defaulted.

It is indisputable that they have my $21K. It is indisputable that they have shipped me no watch. As a matter of fact, the owner of Capetown, CARL MARCUS, who is a very RUDE individual, at one point when I pleaded with him to send me my watch, said to me, "I'm not going to do a [expletive]ing thing." !

Since filing the lawsuit I have been contacted by numerous other individuals who are willing to testify or provide affidavits to a continuing pattern of fraud at Capetown.

My complaint alleges the following causes of action against Capetown Diamond, Jonathan Marcus and Carl Marcus:

COMPLAINT FOR DAMAGES AND EQUITABLE RELIEF
1. BREACH OF CONTRACT
2. UNJUST ENRICHMENT
3. FRAUDULENT CONVERSION
4. FRAUD – CONVERSION BY FALSE PRETENSES
5. FRAUDULENT PROMISE
6. DEFAMATION - SLANDER PER SE
7. SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE

Let the chips fall where they may. This could have been settled long ago if they had just shipped me my watch. It is going on now six months and they still have my money, and I have no watch.

In some post they made online somwhere they have claimed some kind of nonsense that the reason they did not ship me the watch is they were afraid of a chargeback from my credit card company. Nonsense. Once they ship the watch with proof that they shipped it no credit card company could take back their money. The charge remains on my bill and I owe it! Plus, if they had issues why didn't they refund the money six months ago?

Anyway it is too late for that now. A thief cannot steal from you with intent to permanently deprive you of money and then try to return your money to you. They still go down for fraud. I want my watch, or I will prove fraud and collect punitive damages from these people. Let them spend a year in San Diego defending a hopeless cause, lose anyway in the end and maybe they will learn to behave like gentlemen.

Great experience with Capetown

I've been buying from these guys since the late 80's when they were in Buckhead, GA; they moved to Roswell, GA a few years ago (close to my house). I have taken numerous friends to them as well. I, and my friends, have always had great experiences with them. They move an incredible volume of watches and can't afford to sacrifice their reputation. The expensive watch market is fairly small... I deal with Jonathan directly. Anything he has ever told me, condition of a watch, etc., has been straight up and accurate. I've never dealt w/ Demessy.

I got my President from Demesy and my GMTIICTT from highlinetime. Both were 100% great transactions. Good luck and post pics!

I purchased my 16613 from Demesy, had an issue with the watch, and it was replaced with a newer model in less than 3 days.

I went to Capetown to look at a GMT II, they had three, and all had chipped crystals, and were in pretty rough shape. Also, the prices they wanted for them made me want to laugh. I would not purchase from them. Why don't you go to Brown And Co. ?? They usually have used Rolexes, and have very good discounts on new ones. Plus they have 12 months no interest financing! And their customer service is tops! They are in Roswell as well.
