A Harrowing Experience

Several months ago I decided to sell one of my watches. I contacted two large dealers with good reputations on this forum and within a couple of days had reached an agreement with one of them located several states away from me. The agreement was a part cash, part trade deal for my watch.

I boxed my watch up and sent it off. I was told the piece I selected and a check would be overnighted to me on a Friday for Saturday delivery,

That Saturday morning I was staying close to the door waiting. Nothing. At about 11am, I opened the door to find a sticky note saying the delivery company was sorry they had missed me. To this day I have no clue how I didn't hear them.

I immediately realized the next day was Sunday and the following day was a holiday, so if I couldn't figure out how to get the package that day, I was likely out of luck for 72 hours. I made a few calls and was told I could come to the distribution center and pick it up that evening.

I showed up at the appointed time, was given the package and excitedly headed for home. When I opened the box the new (to me) watch lived up to expectations...but there was no check! Since the missing check was for five figures, I was more than a little freaked out! Again, the next day was a Sunday and the following day a holiday. What, I asked myself, was happening here, and what was I going to do?

Well, my wife is an internet sleuth and after 20 minutes on line she said, I think this might be the home phone number of the owner of the company you are dealing with. Call it and see.

So, at 9 o'clock on Saturday night I called the number...and the man who answered did turn out to be the owner of the company. When I explained my situation, he apologized profusely and said he would take care of it. And...he did. The money was wired into my bank account on Tuesday morning.

Three morals to this story--everybody makes mistakes, it pays to do business with a trusted seller, and it also pays to have a wife who can navigate the internet with the best of them.

It's always a little bit nerve racking to have watches shipped through the mail. I still do it, but always a little bit worrisome.

I see you're in Ft. Wayne. I ate at a place called Club Soda there a few weeks ago.

The harrowing part was that the sender forgot to put the check into the box?

Otherwise, you were worried that someone was going to steal the watch over the long weekend from the courier?

The harrowing part was that the check was not in the box...and the store wasn't going to be reachable for two days.

I don't understand, just call in two days. It was always likely to be a mistake, if anyone was looking to scam you would wouldn't have received the watch.
