Hypothetical Question

If you are to start your collection from scratch and the market allows you to get SS pieces from your AD as per your desire, what will be the order of watches you will get from the following in terms of versatility:

Sub date
Sub no date
Sub with green bezel
GMT Batman jubilee
GMT Pepsi jubilee
Explorer black
Explorer white
Daytona white
Daytona Black

I eliminated SD 43 and DSSD because some regard them as larger pieces

Thanks!

Versatility?

Sub Date - Sub - Explorer I - Cermit - GMT Batman Oyster - GMT Pepsi Oyster - Explorer II Black - Explorer II White - Daytona Black - Daytona White

Personal preference?

Pepsi Oyster - Sub Date - Batman Oyster - Sub - Daytona Black - Daytona White - Explorer II (either dial) - Explorer I

Versatile order - 124060, black Daytona, BLNR on Jubilee, white Daytona, and SubLV. From the list, I only want the Sub LV (have), BLNR on Jubilee (have), 124060 and black Daytona. Would take the white Daytona as well. Could get the 124060 back pretty quickly, but trying to wait for a SS Daytona first, also want to see what comes out this year.

I like watches that are versatile and all of these watches I listed have that, the least being the SubLV, but I still find it versatile. The black sub date is great, but don’t need it in a collection, I find it better for a one watch collection.

Pass on the rest on this list and the rest of the Rolex lineup. I find the Pepsi not versatile and not easy on my eyes with the red, blue and black. I only like watches with the ceramic bezel, so no explorer for me.

Do you actually like any of these models? Do you intend to wear them? This sounds like assembling a collection by ticking boxes.

For versatility:

Sub date
Explorer black
BLNR on jubilee
Sub no date
BLRO
Black Daytona
Sub LV
white explorer
white Daytona

For me (and also the order I’m trying to add to my collection in):
DSSD JC dial - already have
BLNR on jubilee - not so patiently waiting
BLRO on oyster - will request next
SkyD black or blue dial on Oyster - will probably wait forever
VTNR on jubilee - if offered / was available before the BLRO
I’d skip the rest of the current SS pieces and start working on PM’s after that (WG sub would be my first)

Hypothetical Question

It starts with the Submariner, which I already have.

GMT BLNR on jubilee is #2

But if they still made a green dial Submariner Date, that would actually be my #2.

Gmt - blro on oyster or 116710ln
Op 41 red or yellow
WG Daytona blue dial or Oysterflex silver dial.

Done. Pass on rest. Less is more for me. They all start to look the same after that.

A Diver a Travel timer and a Chronograph gives you some diversity. The references are up to you.

Ideally, I’d have three different brands to add further diversity to the above: a Submariner, a Patek 5164 and a 321.

Daytona white
Daytona black
GMT Batman
GMT Pepsi

I already have Sub LV (my favourite after Panda) and 16610LN. Not interested in the other ones, Explorers and No date Sub say nothing to me.

Have to agree. It does look a bit like a, "what does everyone say is hot so I should therefore like" list.

OP - in answer to your question - all are versatile, all can be worn daily, all will probably outlast you with a bit of care and periodic servicing. You just need to ask yourself - Do I need a date window? Do I need a GMT function? Do I need a chronograph? Which colour do I like best? What's available? That's all.

1. BLRO on Jubilee
2. Sub LV
3. EXP II white dial
4. Daytona White Dial
5 Air King
6. YM Slate Dial

(I can't afford all these models, and would have to pass on some depending on what I bought prior, but just listing my desirability scale per the hypothetical).

Start with the one you like the most. If you like more than one equally, go for the easiest availability or the lowest acquisition cost.

Past that, I can't tell you what you like. Nobody can. The question is, can you? If not, you don't like any of them enough to buy one.

For me, the Sub Date and the black Explorer II are the most versatile. I think a lot of people above are answering what they like or would buy!

That was my two to pick a first from and I used Harry's logic to go with the Exp II as it had better availability/ negligible grey premium. I preferred the feel on the wrist too and the less flashy look.

I’d personally wear a GMT or Daytona less as there’s plenty places I go that I wouldn’t be comfortable wearing them but the Exp II isn’t really noticed at all so makes it very flexible. Maybe not with a suit if that’s your thing.
