Anybody ever fail at negotiating?
I recently bought a yg datejust from a vintage dealer and I am happy with the watch but am really kicking myself for not even trying to negotiate. It was my first really big watch purchase and previous to that, I had a negative experience negotiating with another dealer for the same model, so fear kicked in, and I just agreed to the first price he put down. In retrospect, I probably could have respectfully asked for 5-10% off and saved a considerable chunk of $$$.
Anyway, just posting in hopes some of you have done something similarly dumb and felt like an unnecessary spendthrift at some point. Please tell me your stories and lessons learned so I don’t feel so bad! |

Personally, I love negotiating and never miss a chance.
Where I live, there is a local law that requires grocery stores to charge ten cents for paper or plastic bags and I always ask for a discount, every time. Haven’t won that one yet, but I love trying. You just got to get over that uncomfortable feeling. Either way, don’t beat yourself up. I think that is always the plight of secondary market purchases. At retail it's usually a no brainer. But preowned, IMHO, the price is really subjective because it ultimately depends on the value you place on it and are willing to pay for it. In the end we all wish we could get a better deal though.

I make offers throughout the Classifieds then hammer negotiations until sellers take 75% off.
Rolex owners always win. |

I got 16% off my latest Omega in December 2022. I didn't bother asking for a discount on the blue Sky Dweller they sold me in July 2022. Maybe I missed a trick there but I doubt it.
I have received discounts on Rolex but not in 2021 or 2022. I ask if I think there's a possibility on a new watch. For a second hand watch I regard it as an essential box to tick and although I don't buy used watches often, I've always paid less than the advertised price. If you are happy with your watch and you paid what you were prepared to (which is obviously the case), there's no reason to kick yourself. Just make a note to self for future reference. |

Never for a watch but I have paid more than the advertised price a few times just because it was worth it to me.

I never miss an opportunity to negotiate, in whatever acquisition situation it may be.
At Rolex ADs any attempt to negotiate is futile since around early 2019. However, I do recall being offered unsolicited discounts at ADs on Rolex previously. I haven’t bought many watches from Greys, but on the occasions I have, I’ve used the multi-vendor low ball strategy. Essentially, it’s identifying a series of vendors of the same reference, entering a declared offer but also advising that the same offer has been made to X vendors and the first to acquiesce will gain the sale. That strategy doesn’t work with niche watches, vintage, etc, since generally speaking it’s rare that several vendors have exactly the watch I seek.

That’s the thing, I wasn’t really happy with the price but overspent on my own budget because of the previous negative experience. Now I’m fixated on overpaying / paying a premium and fear this is going to taint how I feel about the watch. Definitely my own rookie mistake! Hoping all these thoughts go away once I actually receive it.

I will negotiate anything if I think the price is too high.
I have also paid more than the asking price for many items because I felt the asking price was way too low. When I negotiate to buy I usually start within <5% of my number. If we don’t hit my number I walk. My number could be 5-50% lower than the asking price. When I sell I look at all the comps and come with a number 10-50% lower depending on how attached I am to said item, condition, what I’ve got into it, etc. I rarely ever budge from my selling number. Think about it like this: You paid for a lesson and learned something. I learned a lot through purchasing a few watches as well. Mainly on what to look out for on case condition. Some knowledge comes with purchase experiences.

I believe that some people believe "negotiating" means they get everything they want.
I know many people who want a deal that is 100% in their favor and often it is no longer about the purchase.

I live for negotiations whether it be watches, cars or any other big ticket item. But the key is being informed and knowing the market value of what you are trying to negotiate for (and what your own item is worth if trading). I have had estimates off by thousands every single time so you have to do your due diligence to protect yourself.

Sure, all the time when I was younger. Part of that was being less in control of my emotions, and part of it was constantly being in a state of financial weakness.
Now, neither of those is true. You have to be willing to walk away. |
