I am bouncing back and forth between these two - I like the 2 tone Datejust but not ready to spend that on a new watch (I can but I’m setting a limit). The OP looks great on the wrist in store (the stores know how to make the lightning just right of course).

Is there any specific model Datejust to avoid if purchasing an older watch?

This year I acquired a Tudor BB58 on leather and GS GMT quartz (which is a fantastic watch)

I’ve scrolled many threads but this is my first post.

Assuming first Rolex, get the OP brand new from AD. It will be a nice first Rolex you can cherish for a long time.

MSRP on those is still fairly low for a Rolex, so I'd imagine value retention will be quite good going forward as well, just in case you do want to flip sometime down the line.

new OP from AD. but even those are hard to come by now depending on the dial. DJ36 i requested took about 1.5 months. im currently waiting 7 months for a green OP.

I’d go for new OP in silver, as it’ll still get you the TT look, albeit without any external gold. Dial ends up looking more gold than silver in most light due to reflections.

I’m leaning that way. I want my first Rolex to be mine alone. Plus I purchased the other 2 watches from Rolex AD I won’t have to wait long.

It’s really a matter of personal preference…..but a DJ fluted/jubilee is such a nicer watch than an OP imo.

There is no specific DJ model to avoid but I’d highly recommend that if you go grey you only buy from a very reputable source and buy the newest one you can within your budget.

Why no love for a new DateJust? So many dial, bezel, bracelet combinations, you can tailor it exactly to what you like. 36 or 41, stainless steel would be my recommendation, the word classic is overused, but not as respects the DateJust.

Not that no love for datejusts, i love my 126234. OP mentioned hes not ready to spend on a DJ yet. Price does add up pretty quickly as you start customizing it. If OP is willing to add another 2k, he should be able to get a pretty nice oyster/smooth bezel combo.

Going through the same debate, but with a new 41 DJ vs 41 OP. I am going with the OP, primarily because it does not have the cyclops. I dont know why, but I cant get over the magnifying glass.

Recently got a black faced 36 x3200 OP then a sub. Always like to re-wear the OP - no stories -- as classic as it comes. and.... way below the radar so you can ALWAYS wear it without someone checking it out . PLUS - NO PCL's.

Ask the AD for both.

If they can't sell you either, then get the DJ via Grey. It will still be "yours" - blank warranty card and everything.

I will get the call on the OP in the next few months. Don’t want to decline that. Seems a 1990-early 2000s TT DJ are plentifully and priced at half new…so if I buy anything preowned that seems to be the way to go. Plus that one would be worn less. I’ve pitched 3 watches this year I can see how this can spin out of control. Kind of like my penchant for Italian double shotguns that don’t get used enough.

In your dilemma I would say the OP. Love my DJ but as others had mentioned given it all, get the brand new one that’s yours with the knowledge your the first owner and the AD experience and all. At least if it’s in a color you like.

If you're looking as far back as the 90s, and are good with smaller watches, there's also the OP/OP Date versions in 34mm, which are probably priced even better than the DJs of the same era.

Both are great timepieces, it depends on your preference. If you like TT Datejust better, I think it's better to go for that. I would rather go for the new one at your AD, just save more money. You can order Datejust (per my Rolex boutique), it might take around 3 months.

Always go for the first choice.
