It's a ton of dough and for me it too big of a financial distraction w/o selling a half dozen watches. I do envy you a bit. Plt is a great watch material and I always love reading the stories in WatchTime and other mags on the P950 program at VC or just the extra efforts needed to make a DD or DDII in platinum.
You're going to catch some sh*t I suspect on the home front, but you have a great new watch. I think I'd focus on telling her of your "long-term secret desire for one and at this price you couldn't pass it up." I wouldn't weasel around with her, it will just upset her more.

Rent "Joan of Arc", and then show her the watch.

He may not be near a computer. There may not be one in his hospital room.

Well, ask her what she wants and prepare to burn a deeper hole in your wallet. I tried that once and got burnt like 2x deeper hole in the wallet. At least I don't have to goto the doghouse

If he's anything like me, then telling the mrs "I've always liked/wanted that watch" doesn't mean much anymore

Try THis:

"Hi honey. I bought a new watch because I got a really good deal, and I am going to sell my other watch for the difference." Then when you get lo ball offers on ebay, just withdraw the listing and keep the old and new. By that time she will have cooled off. Kind of like what I did!!!! It worked!!

If I remember correctly, your original plan was to tell her some "investment blah blah'' if you bought the Sea-Dweller. Is it possible for you to now do the same for the platinum Datejust?

In any case, I know how you feel. There's many a time when I've fallen in love with a watch at first sight and simply have to have it - provided of course if I can afford it. If you have the money and the watch makes you go weak in the knees when you look at it, then my advice is don't hesitate! Just tell your wife that it's better that a watch makes you feel that way than another woman! All the best!

Gotta pick up something with diamonds from the AD to give to her. If he wants the sale, he'll give you a deal for that too! He knows.

Could you / would you reconsider towards the new Rolex TT Submariner? I bet it's an incredible piece. Would save you a ton of cash and has a lot of "wow" factor in it too". The TT Sub would be easier to flip [if you get bored of it], would be easier to get rid of should you run into a financial debacle and you would probably not lose as much value. In my case I have not owned a watch (yet) that after awhile the "wow" factor does not wear off. Just a thought.

I can see that the Platinum DDII is ton's more exclusive.........

Here is my TRUE story. I have been angling for a GMT IIc for about two years now. At first my better half was shocked. So I tried the obvious. You get a Rolex and I get one. That went in the dumper fast. So I waited a few months and tried tactic number 2....What about some new jewelry? No way Jose! So I wait a few more months, my birthday approaches....no luck. Finally I found out what she wanted. I get my Rolex GMT she gets the equivalent money to spend whatever way she wants. That worked/ It is on my wrist.

Hi , Guys
Ok , I will come clean on this one ...
The " new AD " doesn't know yet , but I will pull out on the deal with him , as when I mentioned it to the wife , she wasn't impressed , but she was pretty cool about it and said that it was money I earned and if I wanted it that badly ... no problem . However she said that she thinks that I may not have thought this trough properly . She then suggested that I should shop around before committing . I did commit I said , but did not pay any deposit . She thinks that there is no problem telling the guy that you made a hastily decision and regret it . End of story .
So , I did shop around and got my uncle to bring me the exact same watch from Hong Kong for ..... a whopping 9000 USD less !!!! It should be with me by the middle of August .
The wife now has this grin from one ear to the other and ..... wants the 9000 difference for her to go shopping . Can we ever win ????

I think you are crazy. You really need to discuss such a purchase with the wife.

You see I told you that you should have talked to your wife on this! I think she deserves a nice YM for her work!

Yes , many of you had it right all the way . I knew the moment I walked out of that shop it wasn't all together right .
She will not go for a YM , she needs a new "beach watch" he has an old an slightly battered technomarine ( chrono with little diamond bezel ) and changing the straps is getting a bit boring . So maybe a nice 16610 or if I can find a 16600 to match with my 116660 that may do the trick . She has been eying that 12J from Chanel , but I believe that is too much of a fashion watch . heaps of fakes and copies about and way to much money for what it is . Yeah ... I should keep my gob shut

Oh yes, she who must be obeyed won again. She'll be telling you about this forever, now you just have to grin and bare it. Now just be on the lookout for when she has a similar week moment, it will happen. Please post pictures when it arrives.
